Emily's heart rate slowed down to the point that it looked to halt as he was making a courtly gesture by delicately caressing her palm with his lips. The issue was that to her overloaded sensibilities, it felt provocative, rather than courtly, and it evoked feelings that were out of proportion with the situation.
