The storm that brought me

552 Words
Ruby The sea was churning, I yelled orders over the gail winds howls. I knew there was lands at the tail end of the storm but I didn't expect it to circle back. We had followed the storm and stayed out of its wake but as soon as I gave the okay for us to dock all hell broke loose. We had lost the mast and several men were swept to sea, I had to act fast and caught a young boy before he went over the side I pushed him towards the cabins and told him to go assist the doctor. I could see the doctor dragging the wounded below deck. I then slammed into Cole as the ship rocked, my breath caught for a brief moment as I worried we were about to go under. As soon as I could catch my balance I stepped away from brother and went back to instructing the crew. The storm lasted two hours, which was plenty of time to damage the ship enough that I knew we couldn't sail away from the land without repairing first, and that was looking to take two weeks if her damage assessment was correct. Once all had settled and the ship was in a cove, I finally went down to my cabin, I had not slept in days and this storm caused me to lose a lot of energy. Closing my eyes i can sees Garet, a sad smile starts to form as again i mourn his loss. It had been a month since his passing I missed his witty comebacks and his constant wanting me in his arms. I didn't realize he had become so much a part of me that now he was gone I felt a part of myself was gone as well. I was bringing his brother the news and had planned to introduce his niece or nephew. I knew by the way the child moved was due to go into labor at anytime. I however refused to be a normal woman, I knew Garet would be mad if he had been alive, but he would have also respected my wishes to be with the only family he had for his child's birth. Cole would not let me be to far away from him so he came along even though we argued constantly over it, I felt he needed to be back at home and manning the crews. He argued I was his only family and if I had to sail then he would too. Finally I gave up the argument, but did not allow them to see me at anything but my best. I acted as if this pregnancy did not bother me in anyway, I never cried out when the baby kicked so hard it broke a rib. I simply excused myself and checked in with the doctor. I finally drifted off to sleep. Everyone liked Garet and all respected the fact that this journey was one both of heartbreak and blessing. They did not wait to be told anything after they were anchored, they all knew their jobs. Cole gathered the best of what they had to trade, then went ashore with a few others to see what they could do to fix the ship and get to their destination.
