Chapter 3 The Forged Crisis

585 Words
For forty-eight hours, I stayed in the guest suite and kept one hand near my stomach. No one came to ask why I'd given up my keys. Then the emergency siren sounded through the pack house, its highest pitch reserved for a life-threatening crisis. I went to the infirmary. Pack members crowded the entrance, blocking one another's view. Inside, Ryker, one of Caleb's elite guards, convulsed on a cot. Foam covered his lips, and his skin had begun to turn blue. He had carried wounded wolves to my door more times than I could count. Now his boots struck the cot frame while no one held his shoulders still. Mia stood beside an open herb jar. "It's nightshade," she told the elders rushing in. "It was in the tonic I made for Ryker. Elara must have left it here by mistake. Unless she。" She covered her mouth and let the elders finish the accusation for her. One of them lifted the jar. Its NIGHTSHADE label faced the room. "No trained healer would confuse this with anything else." "I trusted her inventory." Tears gathered in Mia's eyes. She dipped a finger into the jar. "I have to make sure." The elders exchanged looks. Mia had already pushed the blame toward carelessness, then left enough silence for them to imagine intent. Before anyone could stop her, she touched it to her tongue. Her body jerked. She spat dark liquid onto the floor and collapsed. Under the bitter herb smell, I caught the dye from my own stores mixed with blood. The stain spread too dark across the stone. I knew the dye by its sharp mineral smell, and I knew nightshade did not work that fast. Caleb forced his way through the doorway. He went straight to Mia and dropped to his knees, leaving Ryker to seize on the cot behind him. "What happened?" His Alpha power filled the room until several people backed into the walls. An elder gave him a hurried account and pointed toward me. Caleb crossed the room and thrust a crumpled report under my nose. "Explain this." The blood analysis called Mia a one-in-a-million match for my rare restorative bloodline. The odds made no sense, and the seals were wrong. My bloodline appeared once in generations. A genuine match would have changed the pack's medical records, yet the parchment carried no elder's countersignature. "It's forged." "Liar." Caleb knelt beside Mia again. "She's dying, and you have the cure. Give her your blood. Now." At his command, the infirmary doors slammed shut. The locks dropped into place. "No." My hand covered my stomach. "I won't." He rose and faced me. "I'm done asking." "Look at the seal. Look at her mouth. She's faking it." My voice caught, but there was no other way to stop him. "I can't give blood. I'm pregnant." The room went quiet around us. Even Ryker's cot had stopped knocking against the floor. Caleb stared at me. For one second, his grip on the report loosened. Mia made a weak sound from the floor. His fingers closed again. "Pregnant?" He laughed once. "You'd lie about carrying my pup to keep me from saving her? I don't know who you are anymore." He came at me before I could move. Both hands clamped around my shoulders, and his command forced my knees to bend. "You will keep her alive." He shoved me toward the empty cot beside Ryker, reaching to pin me down and take the blood himself.
