Tessa's POV
Almost as soon as I made this decision, there was a knock on the door.
"Who's there?" I answered.
"Luna," an older woman's voice spoke, "we have come to take you to the Alpha's chambers."
Lucien's chambers.
My lips stretched into a smirk at the sound of that.
"Of course," I said. "Come in."
The elderly maid walked in, leading six more maids in. They placed me in front of the mirror before putting finishing touches to my hair, clothes and other accessories.
After being dressed in cosmetics and jewelry, I stared into the mirror and decided that being reborn in Selena's body wasn't all that bad. She was very beautiful, at least. She could have been compared to me in my time.
"Could you wait outside for a moment, please?" I said to the maids. Sounding so polite made me want to cut off my tongue, but I had to act like Selena so that nobody would suspect anything.
"You shouldn't keep the Alpha waiting, Luna," the elderly maid said.
"I know that," I replied. "I'm really sorry. I'm going to be out shortly, I promise."
The maids exchanged glances.
"Hurry up, Luna," the elderly maid said.
"Of course. Thank you," I replied.
The maids left, and I grinned. During my search earlier, I had seen a jewelled dagger under another pillow. It was a really fancy thing, and I could bet that Selena had no idea how to use it. Since it was under a pillow like the bottle, she had clearly tried to stab herself, but chickened out and drank poison instead.
I slipped the dagger into the side of my corset and stepped out of the room, keeping my head down like the typical pushover. One of the maids laid a veil over my head, blurring my view of the hallway, and I was led between them to the Alpha's chambers. As I walked, I chanted in my head.
I'm going to kill Lucien Gray, I thought. Get in there, pretend to be Selena Winters, distract him, kill him, and be out of this damn place before anyone notices the body.
His pack would be thrown into chaos, and it would serve him right for ruining my plans. I grinned with anticipation just as we reached our destination.
I knew these brass doors very well. I had slept behind them several times while I was the Luna of Lucien's pack.
I might not know how to pull off a perfect Selena Winters act, but I definitely knew how to please Lucien. I knew just the perfect way to keep him distracted.
I knocked with false timidity, and the maids waited for Lucien's approval before opening the doors. I walked in, wearing a small smile under the veil, and bobbed a perfect curtsy.
"Alpha," I said.
"Selena."
His voice was exactly how I remembered it. Except… What was he sounding soft for? I had never heard him sounding like that before. He always spoke to me with hatred and anger, while at the same time trying to kill me. A wish that came true eventually.
Yet here he was, sounding like he wanted to put me at ease…
Oh, I thought, he's putting on an act in order to make his new bride trust him.
Typical Lucien. I should have known.
Behind me, I heard the maids leaving and shutting the door, but I did not take my eyes off my archenemy. I removed my veil, then reached up to take out the ribbon binding my hair, keeping my eyes on him the whole time. Lucien always loved it when I let my hair down, and I smiled slowly as Selena's golden blonde hair tumbled down my shoulders.
Then my hands went to the sash holding the dress together, and I toyed with it, watching him from under my lashes.
"Selena," he said, his voice surprisingly steady. "I'm sure you've been told about your duties tonight."
I looked innocently up at him, and he immediately softened further. I swear, these big baby eyes were designed for making innocent expressions.
"Alpha?" I said.
"I don't know what you've been told," he said, "but you don't have to do anything tonight."
Aww, what a gentleman.
I could tell that it wasn't an act this time, though. Lucien had never been one of those perverted Alphas. But he had more than made up for it by making it his life's mission to stand in the way of my goals.
I stepped forward, my gaze fixed on his even as my hands undid the sash. I slid the dress off and it pooled at my feet just as I stepped over it, approaching Lucien.
I placed on hand on his chest, cupping his face with the other.
"I want to," I whispered against his lips just before mine crashed into them.
Our tongues collided as we devoured each other's mouths. Lucien's kiss was like lightning, zapping heat through my whole body in seconds. My knees went weak as flames stirred in my lower belly.
Only Lucien could make me feel this way.
It made me hate him even more.
My hand caressed his chest, tracing a line down to his hardening bulge. I stroked it through the leather of his breeches, and he groaned into my mouth. Next I knew, he was walking me backwards, into the bedpost. My back pressed into the mahogany, and my free hand cupped his nape, pulling him even deeper into the kiss. I was drowning in pleasure, and I didn't come up for air except to moan. I tilted my head back, baring my throat to him, and Lucien's lips immediately latched onto the flesh there. I arched into the sensation, my body moving against his.
Focus, I reminded myself.
I couldn't let myself get carried away by his touch. I had to draw the dagger while he wasn't paying attention and plunge it into his heart. Usually, an Alpha would be able to detect murderous intent, but years of battling Lucien had taught me how to hide mine from him. But as I reached for the dagger, I felt my mind shrink from the idea. It was like an insane pressure was crushing it. This body was refusing to let me draw that dagger.
I should have known.
An Omega stood no chance against an Alpha's aura. Not that I was going to let that stop me. I remained alert for my chance to strike, even as we tumbled into the large bed.
It didn't come.
