Chapter 3 – Between Fire and Ashes

1069 Words
The morning was cruel. Light spilled through the curtains like knives, stabbing at my swollen eyes. My body ached as though I’d been torn apart from the inside, though it was only my heart that had been shattered. I hadn’t slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw two ghosts: Jason’s lips on another woman… and the stranger’s lips on mine. I dragged myself out of bed, my feet heavy against the floor. In the mirror, I barely recognized the girl staring back My eyes were rimmed red, my lips still tingling with a fire that didn’t belong to Jason anymore. “What’s wrong with me?” I whispered to my reflection, gripping the sink as though it could hold me together. I should have been angry at the stranger. I should have screamed, shoved him away, demanded answers. Instead, I’d melted in his arms. Instead, my body had betrayed me with hunger I couldn’t understand. And Jason… God, Jason. His name was a dagger, twisting deeper with every breath. I thought about the way he used to hold me, the promises he whispered, the forever he painted so vividly. And then, I saw the way he touched her, like I was nothing but a forgotten story. My phone buzzed on the counter. My chest lurched before I even looked. Jason. With trembling fingers, I answered. “Hello?” “Elara.” His voice cracked through the line, desperate. “Please… just listen.” Tears stung my eyes. “Why, Jason? Why did you do it?” Silence. Then a sigh. “It’s not what you think.” I laughed bitterly. “Not what I think? I saw you. You kissed her like you used to kiss me. You held her like I didn’t exist.” “I was drunk,” he muttered. “It meant nothing. You mean everything.” His words cut deeper than the truth. “Don’t lie to me. Three years, Jason. You destroyed three years with one kiss.” “Elara, don’t throw this away. You love me. You said forever.” “Forever ended the moment you chose her.” My voice broke as I hung up. The phone slipped from my hand, clattering against the floor. Sobs ripped through me, raw and ugly. I slid down the wall, curling into myself as grief swallowed me whole. And then… I felt it. That presence. My tears stilled. Slowly, I lifted my head. He was there. The stranger. Leaning against the doorway as though he had always belonged there. The dark fire in his eyes burned through me, stripping me bare. “You” My voice shook. “How did you?” “You’re hurting,” he said simply, his tone deep, steady. “I couldn’t stay away.” I scrambled to my feet, fury mixing with fear. “You can’t just follow me, can’t just appear whenever you want!” “I told you,” he cut in, his voice calm but unyielding. “You’re not alone anymore.” The words made my chest twist painfully. I shook my head. “Why me? Why are you here? Who are you?” For the first time, something flickered in his gaze softer, almost human. He stepped closer, each movement deliberate, as though he carried the weight of inevitability. “I’m someone who won’t let you break,” he said quietly ”Not even when the world tries to destroy you.” My breath hitched. Jason had never said anything like that. Jason had promised love, but this man spoke like he was a shield, like he’d burn down the world before letting it touch me again. “Why do I feel this?” I whispered, trembling. “This pull toward you. It doesn’t make sense.” His hand lifted, hovering for a heartbeat before cupping my face His palm was warm, grounding, and the gentleness of his touch undid me completely. His thumb brushed away a tear, and my knees almost buckled. “Because some things don’t need to make sense,” he murmured. “They just are.” My lips parted, my heart pounding so hard I thought it would break free. His gaze dropped to my mouth, and in that moment, I knew resistance was already lost. His lips crashed into mine, and the world shattered. This wasn’t the careful kiss of last night. This was fire and hunger, a claiming that burned through my veins. I clutched his shirt, dragging him closer as his hands framed my face, tilted me into him as though he couldn’t get enough His mouth moved against mine with a ferocity that made my pulse roar, every broken part of me screaming for more. When his tongue brushed mine, I moaned into him, the sound raw, desperate. He swallowed it greedily, deepening the kiss until I was dizzy, until I forgot the rain, Jason, betrayal everything but him. When he finally tore away, I was breathless, my lips swollen, my body trembling. “You feel it too,” he whispered, his forehead pressed to mine. His breath was hot, his voice low “Don’t deny it.” I wanted to God, I wanted to deny it, to scream that this was wrong, that I didn’t even know him. But I couldn’t. Because he was right. The fire inside me didn’t lie. Before I could speak, a thunderous knock shattered the moment. I froze. He stilled. “Elara!” Jason’s voice roared through the apartment. “Open the door! Please, I just want to talk!” My blood iced over. The stranger’s jaw clenched, his eyes darkening with a fury that wasn’t entirely human. He stepped back, his body taut, dangerous. Jason pounded again, harder this time. “Elara, I know you’re in there! Please, don’t shut me out!” My chest heaved, torn between two fires the one that had betrayed me, and the one that consumed me now. The stranger leaned close, his lips brushing my ear, his voice a lethal whisper “Choose carefully,” he murmured. “Because once you open that door… everything changes.” My heart pounded against my ribs, my palms slick with sweat Jason’s pleas grew louder, more desperate. The stranger’s hand lingered on my face, his eyes fierce, unrelenting. And in that breathless moment, I realized the truth: whichever man I chose, the other would destroy me.
