The world didn’t end.
It just got... louder.
No big blowups. No dramatic confrontations.
Just people knowing. And life continuing anyway.
Tuesdays were still laundry at Lily’s.
But now her sister dropped off a casserole "by accident" at 6pm.
“Figured you’d be here,” she said, eyeing Adrian folding towels. “Hi.”
“Hi,” he said back. Awkward. Polite.
She left. The casserole was good.
Thursdays were still Adrian cooking.
But now Mark from work texted: *You making that pasta again? Save me a plate.*
Adrian sent back: *Come at 7. Bring wine.*
Mark showed up. Met Lily. Talked about the leak in Adrian’s bathroom for 20 minutes.
When he left he hugged Adrian. “Proud of you, man. For real.”
Lily stopped deleting texts.
If Ethan’s sister liked a photo, she didn’t panic.
If someone asked “how’s it going,” she said “we’re figuring it out” instead of “it’s new.”
Adrian stopped setting an alarm for 1am.
He started setting one for 7am instead. *Coffee at Lily’s?* became the default text.
Milo got used to two leashes. One for each of them on Saturday walks.
People at the lake started recognizing them. “You two together?”
Lily would look at Adrian. He’d nod. “Yeah. We are.”
Guilt still showed up.
On a Wednesday, Lily saw a photo of Ethan at a wedding. No ring. Smiling, but not all the way.
She didn’t text Adrian for 3 hours.
When she did: *I’m okay. Just had a moment.*
*Adrian: Want company?*
*Lily: Please.*
He came over with soup. They didn’t talk about Ethan. They talked about Milo’s vet bill and the new bookstore.
At 9:30pm he left. She walked him to the door.
“Thank you for not pretending I’m fine,” she said.
“Thank you for telling me when you’re not,” he said.
That was the new rule. Say it out loud
Sunday morning. No plans.
Adrian showed up with donuts and bad coffee from the gas station.
Lily was on the porch in sweats, hair in a bun, reading.
Milo was asleep between them.
They didn’t talk about the past.
They didn’t talk about the future.
They talked about whether pineapple belongs on pizza.
They talked about the leak that was finally fixed.
They talked about nothing.
At 10pm Adrian kissed her forehead at the door. Not rushed. Not guilty.
“See you tomorrow?”
“Yeah,” Lily said. “Tomorrow.”
Back at his apartment, he didn’t stare at the ceiling.
He just slept.
At 10:02pm:
*Lily: New normal isn’t terrible.*
*Adrian: No. It’s pretty good.*
