They stayed in it.
No announcements.
No big talks with friends.
No "so what are we."
Just mornings and takeout and Milo.
Adrian found a one-bedroom 8 minutes from Lily. Not together. Close.
First night in the new place, he texted her a photo of the empty living room:
*It echoes. Come test it?*
She showed up 20 minutes later with blankets and pizza.
They sat on the floor and talked until midnight. Then she kissed his cheek at the door and went home.
_Slow._
---
Weeks turned into a rhythm.
Tuesdays: Laundry at her place because his machine was broken.
Thursdays: He cooked. She brought wine she couldn’t pronounce.
Saturdays: Lake. Bookstore. Milo running in circles.
Sundays: No plans. Just whoever’s couch was closer.
At 1am Adrian slept.
At 7am Lily texted: *Coffee?*
At 9am he was at her kitchen table.
People asked.
His coworker: “You dating anyone?”
Adrian: “Kinda. It’s new.”
Her sister: “You seem lighter.”
Lily: “I’m trying something.”
No names. No details.
The bubble was warm and they weren’t ready to poke holes in it.

One night in late October, the power went out at Lily’s.
She called him at 8:42pm.
“My breaker’s dead and I’m not sitting in the dark with Milo giving me judgmental looks.”
“Be there in 10.”
He brought a flashlight, candles, and soup.
They ate on the floor again. Power didn’t come back until 11.
“Stay?” Lily asked quietly when he was putting on his jacket.
Not like before. Not 1am. Just... it’s late and it’s raining.
Adrian looked at her. “Yeah. On the couch.”
She nodded. Tossed him a blanket.
They fell asleep to the sound of rain on the windows. Separate blankets. Hands almost touching in the middle.
In the morning the sun was back.
Milo was asleep between them.
Lily made coffee.
Adrian made pancakes.
Neither of them mentioned that this was the first time he’d stayed over.

That night, back at his own apartment, Adrian stared at the ceiling.
Not because he couldn’t sleep.
Because he didn’t want to ruin it by rushing.
His phone buzzed.
*Lily: Bubble’s nice. Can we keep it a little longer?*
*Adrian: Yeah. As long as you want.*
