IVY’S P.O.V
I stared at Cam, unblinkingly, trying not to betray the fact that my mind was whirling about, wondering if he knew about my situation with Devin. If he did, how?! I clear my throat quietly, managing to keep a blank expression as I asked, “what…what…are you talking about?”
“You were crying, so I just assumed that my asshole of a brother did something to make you sad,” he answered in a matter-of-fact manner.
“Oh, no, no,” I quickly sigh, silently heaving a sigh of relief. “It’s just something personal, no big deal. If that’s why you feel obliged to stay with me, you don’t have to. I’m fine, really.”
“No, I want to stay with you because I’m not comfortable leaving you while you are unhappy," he answered simply and I stared at him blankly. He gave me a bright smile. "So, have you had anything to eat today?" he asked and I shook my head.
"No," I answered.
"No?" he frowned, creating lines on his forehead. "Well, is there anything here you can eat?" he asked.
"Hmm yeah, I should have something in the freezer," I answered. "But really, Cam, I'm fine. You don't have to babysit me."
He ignored me, heading towards the freezer. I lived in an open plan apartment, that was quite exquisitely furnished, thanks to Devin Watson. The kitchen was clean, maybe a little too clean - a testament to the fact that I hardly did any cooking in there. The surfaces were clean and shiny, no dirty dishes or cutleries laying about. To a stranger, this probably means that I was neat, but I knew better.
Cam opened the freezer and poked his head through. I watched as he rummaged through The freezer, quite sure that he was unlikely to find anything and hoping that he would leave soon. But he pulled his head out with a grin on his face, emerging with a pack of pasta in his hand. "Well, I found something simple we can cook," he said, as he dropped it on the table.
I stared at her him, unsure of what to say, of how to react. "You...want to cook?" I asked.
"Yeah," he answered, still grinning as he rolled up his sleeves. "You have a lot of fresh foodstuff in here, Ivy. Did you just restock?"
Well...not exactly. I've heard them there, for a while - not too long, just long enough. But I did not tell him that. Instead, I said, "Restock? Yeah, sure. I just did. Why do you want to cook for me?" I asked, watching as he glided around my kitchen, grabbing knives and spoons and pots and chopping boards.
He turned to me, still smiling. "Aren't you hungry?"
"Well, yeah?"
"And I'm hungry too. You have nothing in your freezer that I can easily microwave, so cooking it is."
"Yeah, but...." I searched my brain for the perfect words to say, but it was all blank.
"Can you just relax?" he said, as moved towards the tap. He turned it open, placing the pot underneath it to fill it with water. After a couple of seconds, he turned the tap off, and placed the pot on the cooker that was how turned on.
I watched in silence as he chopped onions, carrots, pepper; occasionally, he would glance up and smile briefly at me, and I would gape at him in return. I still did not understand what he was doing. Why was he being so nice? Why did he feel so comfortable gliding around in my kitchen and cooking for me? Didn't this not feel a little too weird? He was my boss's brother, for goodness sake! And also, kind of my boss. I shook my head.
"Well, it's almost ready," he said.
"I didn't know you could cook," I told him, propping my elbow on the table. I was sitting on the small bar stool, swinging my legs back and forth.
"It's a well-kept secret," He answered with a teasing wink that made me smile. Cam could be such a charmer.
Maybe it was not a bad thing that he was here, after all. I definitely felt kind of better having him around. I haven't thought about my situation with Devin in the past few minutes...and now, I was thinking about him again. My displeasure must have been showing on my face, because Cam frowned a bit as he stared at me.
"Ivy? You okay?" he asked.
I sighed. "Yeah, I'm good. Just thinking about how my entire life has gone to shit."
"Do you want to talk about it?" he asked.
I shrugged, saying nothing.
He got the hint and turned towards the pot, turning down the heat from the cooker. "The food is ready," he said. "We just need to let it steam a bit." I watched as he grabbed a couple of plates and cutleries from the cabinets and set them on the table. He turned the gas off completely and pulled off the lid from the pot. The moment he opened the pot, my mouth began to water from the savoury smell that filled the atmosphere.
“Ugh, that smells delicious,” I said, leaning over the counter to stare into the pot. “It looks it too.”
Cam grinned at the compliment. “Why, thank you, Ivy. Ready?” He asked and I nodded as he dished the food into the plates, and handed a plate over to me. He walked towards the freezer and opened it, grabbed a box of juice, two glasses and walked back to the table. He slid a glass towards me and poured the juice into it.
“Thanks,” I said as I picked up a fork and dug into the food. As I had the first taste of the food, I closed my eyes and chewed slowly. “Ugh, this tastes so good,” I groaned.
“Thanks.” When I opened my eyes, he was grinning from ear to ear. A grin that lit up his face and made his eyes shine brighter.
“Seriously, where did you learn to cook like this?” I asked and he simply shrugged his shoulders, saying nothing as he ate his food while staring at me. He was clearly not going to answer the question. I turned back to my food. “Well, if it was possible, I would employ you to cook for me everyday.”
“Who says it isn’t possible?” He asked, his voice taking on a teasing note.
“Really? You’d abandon your work just to cook for me everyday?” I asked.
“Sure, why not? But first, let’s talk payment,” he said and grinned.
I scowled playfully. “And here I thought you’d be doing it from the goodness of your heart,” I said and he laughed. Cameron was so easy to talk to; he was charming and open, unlike his brother who was so closed off. Having a conversation with Devin was almost like pulling off the teeth of a lion. I smiled at Cam. “Well, thank you for doing this, Cam. I feel so much better.”
He smiled. “Please, you don’t have to think me. I’m happy to do it. Besides, I will pick this over having to be stuck in an awful meeting with my brother.”
When we finished eating, Cam offered to wash up the dishes. I tried to help, but he brushed me off, so, I sat by the counter and watched him. As I watched him clear the dishes, I reached out to grab my phone, but the battery had died. I sighed. My eyes were beginning to feel heavy. I was starting to feel dizzy.
Cam dried his hands on a napkin and turned to me. “Are you okay, Ivy?” He asked.
“Yeah,” I answered.
“Well, I’m done here. You should probably get some rest.”
I nodded my head. “Thank you very much, Cam. This was nice of you.”
“I’m just glad you are feeling better. Go ahead and take a nap. I will find my way out,” he said and I nodded again.
Reaching out, I weakly grabbed my phone and pulled myself off the barstool. I walked into the bedroom, and while still feeling a little bit conscious, I managed to plug in my phone. Then, I flopped on the bed and was out in a couple of minutes.
I don’t know how long I slept, but when I woke up,everywhere was uncharacteristically bright. As I sat up, rubbing my eyes with the back of my palm, I had flashes of myself waking up at intervals to pee or to move around on the bed. Other than that, I had not woken up fully until now.
I looked around for my phone and disconnected it from the charger before turning it on. Sighing, I rubbed my head with the tip of my fingers. My phone turned on and I began to scroll through it.
I saw a notification that I had a new mail and I clicked on it.
As I read through the mai, my heart began to pound heavily, there was a loud roaring in my ears. It was a mail from the office.

My eyes blurred after reading the first few sentences, and all I saw was red.
Was Devin really firing me?
