DEVIN’S P.O.V
The moment the door closed behind Ivy, Caroline turned to me rolling her eyes. “What a wretched, gold-digging slut, right? What is going on with you, Devin? Why are you getting mixed up with that sort of girl. If you are going to cheat on me, at least, choose someone worthy.”
“Don’t talk about her like that,” I snapped, feeling furious. I was not sure what I was furious about exactly – for agreeing to marry Caroline, or for not following Ivy to the appointment or was I angry at Caroline for daring to talk to Ivy like that? I was confused. “What are you waiting for?”
She stood, staring at me, her hands still folded across her chest. “Awwn, Devin, we just finished making out. Are you really going to kick me out like I’m one of your sluts?”
“We were not making out, Caroline,” I say, through gritted teeth. Caroline like to delude herself into thinking there was anything emotional or s****l between us. Was she attractive? Yes, but I was not attracted to her. “You jumped at me. Now, get out.”
“What are you going to do about her pregnancy, Devin?”
That was the problem with Caroline, she did not know when to take the hint and shut the f**k up, even when you shoved the hint right in her f*****g face.
“That is none of your business, Caroline. Now, get the f**k out of my office.”
“None of my business? I’m your fiancée!”
“On paper,” I reminded her. “And for the last time, get out before I call the security on you,” I threaten.
“Call the security? Really?” She smirked at me. “You cannot threaten me, Devin. You need me. I’m just one phone call away from making sure you never get that business deal you want with my father.”
I squeezed my eyes shut in frustration. The only reason why I was putting up with this and agreeing to getting married to Caroline was because I needed her father. I groaned inwardly. I felt a hand on my face and my eyes flew open. Caroline was standing in front of me, her hands tracing my jawline. With a frown on my face, I shoved her hands off.
She moved away from me, a frown on her face. “Why are you fighting this so bad, Devin? Why are you fighting us?”
“First of all,” I begin. “There is no us, let that sink in. Secondly, if your father has not told you yet, he needs me more than I need him. I can easily find a different investor better than your father even, but your father can’t find another like me. So, you would think twice before trying to threaten me. Now, get out.”
I watched as her face crumpled. She grabbed her bag and turned away from me, storming towards the door. I heaved a sigh of relief as she stormed out and slammed the door behind her. The moment she was out, I slammed my fist into my table to let out my pent up frustration.
As I slumped back into my seat, the image of Ivy’s face swarm in my head, the way her face crumpled at the sight of Caroline and me, the tear that rolled down her cheek just before she left. I shook my head to get rid of the image before it started pricking me.
I did not care, I should not care. This was all a business decision. Getting married to Caroline, having a child from Ivy – they were all business decisions. I could not let anything get in the way of that. No one was allowed to be an obstacle, not even Ivy.
Yet, I could not shake the images of her crying, her standing in front of me, demanding I talk to her. Why could I not stop thinking about her? Why was she invading my thought? We already agreed to end whatever we had once the child was born, so, why could I not stop seeing her teary eyed?
Why did I even care? No, I didn’t,
I glanced at the clock. My brother, Cameron was supposed to be here for a meeting. Cameron – that was another person I could not think about, I should not think about. Where was he anyway? He was once again late for an important meeting. Cameron had no care for anything in the world except himself, and he got off from making me annoyed.. I’m very sure he chose to come late for this meeting just to make me annoyed. I shook my head as I thought of it.
My phone made a sound and I glanced at it. It was a message from my mother. I picked it up to read it and as I did, I sighed. She wanted me and Cameron to come for dinner tomorrow night and she wanted me to bring Caroline. I shook my head at that. Dinner with Cameron and Caroline – one would kill me with her constant whining and the other will kill me, plain and simple, if he got the chance. I texted her ‘okay’. Then, I dialed Cameron’s number. It rang a couple of times and went straight to voicemail.
I frowned, angry and frustrated but unsure of where to direct my frustration to. I knew I would have to cancel this meeting again, thanks to his absence. I raised my phone to call my assistant to cancel the meeting, then, I paused.
My assistant was Ivy. f**k!
And at this moment, I doubt she still wanted to do anything with or for me. f**k, for a moment there, I had forgotten that she actually worked for me professionally. I slammed my phone on the table and sunk my back into my chair.
Fuck, I had to make a very tough decision. I just knew what I had to do. She would not like it, even I don’t like it, but I had to do it. It was a much better option for the both of us. I had to fire her.
