IVY’S P.O.V I stared, my eyes wide in horror as Caroline hurriedly adjusted her blouse. No, no, I thought to myself, this could not be happening. I could feel my entire body trembling as I stared at the couple. With all the strength I could muster, I closed the door and stepped further into the room, facing Devin and Caroline. “Devin?” I called again, my voice in a whisper. Devin glanced up at me, his handsome face cold and unsmiling as he stared at me. “Why are you here, Miss Stone?” he asked in a flat tone. My brows furrowed in confusion – he never called me ‘Miss Stone’ when we were alone. “I thought you took the week off as agreed.” I glanced at Caroline who was now sitting on the couch with her legs crossed and a smug smile on her face. “Can we talk…privately?” I asked Devin who was simply flipping through the papers in his desk, nonchalantly, acting as though I had not just caught him making out with another woman. My mind whirled around. I could not understand what was going on. Why was Caroline here? I remembered Devin saying that he had no real relationship with Caroline and they were just getting married as a business deal. I was going to end our relationship the moment I found out he was engaged but he refused, So, why was she making out with him in his office? And why was he talking to me like I was just an employee? Before Devin could answer, Caroline straightened up. “Anything you want to say to my fiancée, you say it to both of us,” she said, flipping her long blonde hair backwards, as she glared hard at me. I gritted my teeth as I turned to Caroline. “Trust me, you don’t want to hear this,” I said. I doubt any woman wanted to hear that the man they were about to marry was having a baby by another woman. I turned back to Devin who had gone back to working and ignoring me, acting like I wasn’t standing in front of him. “It’s very important that we talk right now, and privately,” I insisted. “Look, Evie…” Caroline began. “It’s Ivy,” I snapped at her. Caroline knew my name, she was just being intentionally rude and I had no patient for that. I had no patient for Caroline, never had, never will. It could be due to the fact that Caroline got to actually date Devin, or it could be because Caroline was an actual b***h. I hated everything Caroline stood for – a rich wealthy blonde, dating the rich, famous man. Caroline was a b***h, a messy, vicious snobby b***h, and I hated having to deal with her. “My bad,” Caroline answered in a tone that suggested that she actually didn’t care. “Ivy, there is nothing about my boyfriend that I don’t already know. So, whatever it is you want to say, you can say it to both of us. And as you can see, he is quite busy, so say whatever it is you want to say and leave.” I knew she was about to lose my temper, so I sucked in a deep breath. “Devin, can you just f*****g look at me?” I demanded. “Look at me for f**k’s sake! I’m talking to you!” I almost yelled, but he did not even flinch. He kept his gaze on his work and that infuriated me. In a flash, I darted my hands out and shoved the papers off the table to the floor. Devin snapped his head up, his eyes narrowed into slits as he glared hard at me. “What do you think you are doing, Miss Stone?” He asked in a cold tone that could send shivers down anyone’s spine. “Good, you are listening to me now.’ I breathed out. “You didn’t come to the hospital this morning. Why?” I demanded, folding my arms. “Miss Stone, you need to leave now.” I paused. My hands had resumed shaking again. My mind was a mess but I needed to keep a clear head if I was going to have this discussion with him. “You promised that we would go to the doctor’s appointment together,” I continued, trying to keep my voice steady. I no longer cared that Caroline was there. “Why weren’t you there?” I asked, desperate for an answer. I refused to believe that he would ditch me for Caroline, that he had actually ditched me for Caroline. “Doctor’s appointment?” Caroline quipped and I almost sighed in exasperation.. “Oh is this about the pregnancy?” I froze. There was a loud ringing in me ears as I turned slowly in Caroline’s direction. “What?” I say, my voice involuntarily coming out in a whisper. “The pregnancy. He told me about it. You are pregnant, aren’t you? And it’s his baby,” Caroline continued saying, her lips pulled into a small smirk. She did not look like she was concerned that her boyfriend had just gotten another lady pregnant. In fact, I thought, as I tilted my head to study Caroline, she looked quite smug. “You…you…know about this?” The confidence I had walked into the office with had now vanished. Now, I shrunk under Caroline’s smug gaze, and Devin’s harsh and uncaring stares. My heart was pounding loudly against my rib cage and for some reason, I felt overshadowed with shame. I grabbed on to the chair as my legs turned to jelly, threatening to give way “Of course. Like I said, there is nothing about my fiancée that I don’t know,” Caroline answered, stressing the phrase ‘my fiancée’ as though it was some form of warning. She was still seated comfortably on the couch, watching me with disdain and contempt written all over her face. I turned in Devin’s direction. “You told her?” I asked again in disbelief. “Miss Stone, I think you should leave,” Devin said, reaching out for his phone in a manner I knew quite well, a gesture that meant I had been dismissed. I willed my feet to move but they were stuck as I kept staring at Devin. His gaze was on his phone as he clicked away, not even paying attention to me. It was like I was now invisible to him. “You…..you…” I stuttered, unable to find the right words to use. I wanted to say something, but I was not sure what. I wanted to do something, but I felt powerless. “I’m sure you are not deaf, Evie,” Caroline said, rising to her feet. I did not bother to correct her this time. “He said you should leave.” She walked towards me and stood in front of me, her arms folded across her chest. “Listen sweetie, I understand that this must be quite tough for you to comprehend, but sleeping with another person’s fiancée and trying to trap him with pregnancy? That does not really work well for anyone, especially when it’s my fiancée.” I snapped my gaze to Caroline whose face was now hard. I blinked once. Then, twice. Then, thrice…and the tear rolled down my cheek. My heart that was beating quite fast before had now slowed down, feeling the weight of the heavy blow that had just landed on me. It was slowly breaking into pieces. The moment a tear rolled down my cheek, I knew it was over. No matter how hard I tried, I would not be able to stop the tears from flowing in full force, so I mustered all my energy and forced my feet to move, whirling around and dashing towards the door. The moment I was out of the door, the sob burst out and I slapped my hand over my mouth to muffle it. I rushed to the elevator, tears streaming down my face, glancing over my shoulders desperately to make sure no one could see me, then punching in the button on the elevator. The door slid open and I stepped in quickly. The moment the doors were closed and I was alone, I slipped to the floor and burst into a loud sob, her body quaking badly as I held my head in her hands. I cried with reckless abandon, thinking of what just happened. Never in my wildest dreams did I think what had happened would happen. If I had a million guesses of why Devin had blown off our appointment, I would never have guessed that it was because he was with his fiancée. I wouldn’t have guessed that he told her about out arrangement either, or about my pregnancy. Did this mean Devin no longer wanted the baby? Was I stuck with the pregnancy all alone? All I could think of was the fact that I was carrying a baby for a man who was engaged. I should have ended this stupid relationship a long time ago! I wanted to, but Devin refused. I didn’t even know I was pregnant. It was all so sudden….and now, I’m just alone. I had the privacy of the elevator to replay the scene in the office in my head a million times and cry for as long as I could, but the privacy was not for long. The doors began to slide open and I struggled to pull myself to my feet, but it was too late. The person at the other end had already seen what a mess I was, and worse still, I knew who the person was. It was Cameron – Devin’s brother.
