CAM’S POV I took a detour from work to check up on Ivy. She was in a bad shape yesterday, and I was too worried all through the night. So, the moment I got to work this morning, I made sure everything was in order, then, left as soon as I could, but not before ordering a bouquet of roses to give to her. I’ve known Ivy for quite a while, she was my brother’s personal assistant. I clearly remember the day we first met, Devin introduced us. I remember thinking she was quite beautiful. She told me her name and it stuck to my head ever since. I was not ashamed to say that I’ve been nursing a little crush on her for a while. But making a move on my brother’s assistant was not the kind of thing I did; actually it was the kind of thing my brother did. When I arrived at Ivy’s house, there was no one there. But just as I was making the decision to leave, she drove in and stepped out of the car. I turned to face her, and she looked even worse than she did yesterday. Her eyes were red, her cheeks puffy and the eye bags under her eyes were even more visible. I immediately reached out to her, drawing her into my arms and helped her open the door. The two of us stumbled into the house with her still sobbing in my arm. I managed to gently lay the flowers on the table and guide her to the living room. I asked her what was wrong, but she was unable to answer due to her tears. “Ivy, what’s wrong?” I asked again, calmly and patiently. She raised her tear-stricken face to look at me. “I’m…I’m…pregnant,” she said, stumbling over her words. Her words hit me like a brick as I stared at her crying form. I had no idea what to say, or how to react. I wasn’t even sure what to think. My mind was blank for a while. She was pregnant? Did that mean she had a boyfriend? “I…I didn’t know you were seeing anyone,” I blurted out before I could stop myself. I smacked my head mentally. “Sorry, I meant, are you okay?” She covered her face with her palm and sobbed into it like a baby, her body shaking violently. I reached out to her, grabbing her hand and enclasping her palm in mine. “Ivy, calm down and stop crying.” This was the second time I was seeing her cry, and I hated it. I hated to see her in any form of pain or sadness. At this point, I would do anything to stop her from crying. “Is it because you are pregnant? I get it, you are scared, but it’s not a bad thing.” “You don’t get it!” She cried. “You just don’t get it!” I frowned, racking my brain. What exactly did she mean? Did the father abscond? “What exactly is wrong, Ivy? Just talk to me. I might be able to help.” She sighed, the tempo of her cries reducing. Fixing her gaze on the floor, she said, “It’s Devin’s.” I froze. What? I stared at her, unblinkingly. My brain slowed down a bit, my gaze fixed on her even as she raised her head slowly to look at me, probably to gauge my reaction. “Devin,” I repeated slowly, quite unsure of what I was hearing. Devin? I did not even realise that she and Devin were a thing. I think back on all the times I’ve seen them interact, there was nothing to suggest that they were together. In fact, as far as I can remember, they’ve always been treating each other professionally. “Cam?” She called. “Hmm,” I answered, a little dazed. I shook my head. “Right. So, you are pregnant and it’s Devin’s,” I repeated. She sniffled. “Yeah.” “Does he…does he know?” I asked. “Yeah,” she answered flatly. She had stopped crying now, but her eyes were still watery and her face red. “Ivy, you know he’s engaged right?” She stared at me hopelessly and I feared she would burst into tears again. I reached out to grab her hand comfortingly. “I know. He…he said it was just a business deal.” “Yeah, but it’s still an engagement.” She sighed brokenly, using her free hand to wipe the tears on her face. “It was a mistake,” she whispered. “I…I didn’t mean for it to happen. It was a mistake.” “So, are you dating him or…” I trailed off, wondering if this was the right time to ask the question. Was there really a right time? She shook her head. “We just…” her voice trailed off too and I got what she was trying to say. They just had s*x. “Once?” I asked, almost hopefully even though I knew the chances of that been possible was quite slim. Her eyes dimmed, maybe in shame. “A couple of times. For a while, actually,” she whispered. My heart broke a little at that. I mean, nobody likes hearing that the girl they liked had been sleeping with their brother. “Right,” I say slowly. “And when you told him?” I asked. “He…he…wants me to keep the baby,” she answered. “But I went to see him yesterday, and Caroline was there and she knew, and it was just….” She sniffled again, unable to complete her sentence. I just nodded. So, that must have been why she was crying yesterday. I could just imagine how it went down, especially knowing the kind of person Caroline was - cutthroat and ruthless. I shook my head. “So, what happened today?” I asked gently. “I was fired,” she stated plainly. That shocked me. “What?” “Devin fired me,” she said. “He got you pregnant and then, fired you?” Was Devin aware of how that sounded, how it looked? Knowing my brother, he probably knew and just did not care. Ivy shrugged her shoulders, and I could se show much this hurt her. She probably trusted Devin and he hurt her like this. I could feel my insides swelling with anger at the thought. She looked up at me, fresh tears feeling her eyes. “I just…my life is a mess,” she whispered. “I’m pregnant and I have no job. What am I going to do?” She asked, clearly trying not cry. I squeezed her fingers tightly, comfortingly. She was hurting. She made a mistake, and she was suffering from it. That was enough to make me feel for her; that and the fact that this was the woman I liked, so much. “You are going to be fine, Ivy,” I said, keeping my voice calm and soft. “How?” She cried. “How will I be fine?” I didn’t know, but she would be fine. She had to be. “You will be fine,” I repeated firmly. “I’m always here for you, Ivy. You know that. I’m here for you, as long as you want,” I said. She looked at me, her eyes ashen with tears. There was a hopeful expression on her face. “Really?” She whispered. “Of course. I’m always here for you. I will help and support you anyway I can. I just need you to stop crying now,” I said gently. She stared at me unblinkingly for a while. Then, she nodded her head slowly, raising her hand to wipe her face with her fingers. “This is the second time you are seeing me crying like this,” she noted, her voice still hoarse from all the cries. I waved my hand dismissively. “I’m getting used to it,” I said and she smiled. “Thank you so much, Cameron,” she said, her voice earnest and sincere. “You are such a good friend.” Friend. A slight pang hit my chest at that word but I shove it aside and smiled at her. Her eyes glanced at the table, in the direction of the flower. “And I can’t believe you got me flowers!” She exclaimed. She was sounding better now. I smiled. “I wanted to check up on you after yesterday and to cheer you up a little bit.” I said. “I’m sorry for ruining it.” “It’s fine. I just need to make sure you are feeling better. Come here,” I said, stretching my arms. She hesitated a bit, and I felt a moment of uncertainty. Was this too much? Did I cross a boundary? Then, she moved closer to me, settling in my arms. I closed my arm around her shoulders, tucking her head under my chin. She sighed. “Thank you Cam.” “Yeah.” I thought of Devin, and was filled with fury. I wanted to smash my fist into his face even if he wasn’t here. My phone pinged and when I glanced at it, I saw a notification reminding of dinner with my family tonight. Perfect. I would see Devin and give him a piece of my mind…and my fist. I could not wait.
