DEVIN’S POV
My alarm went off and I dropped the pen in my hand to pick up my phone. It was already past six which meant that if I had to leave immediately if I wanted to be early for dinner at my parents’ house. Sighing, I dropped my phone and closed my laptop. Caroline should be here anytime soon.
Almost immediately, there was a knock on the door and before I could replied, it was pushed open and Caroline sauntered in. As she walked in, I took in her appearance – a fitted mini dress glittering under the lights, and a pair of strappy heels. She had her hair brushed out and flowing across her shoulders, and her face made up perfectly. Objectively, one could say Caroline was a beautiful woman, a very attractive one. It was a shame that her beauty did nothing for me.
“Hello darling,” she smiled sweetly in my direction, walking over to kiss me on my cheek. I don’t understand why she chooses to act like we are a real couple even in private.
“Are you ready?” I asked briskly.
Ignoring my question, she asked, “how was your day today?”
I paused to reflect on that. How was my day? Well, let’s see. Ivy came in today to scream at me for being fired and that ruined my mood. I hated seeing her so worked up, and yet so sad, but there was hardly anything I could do now, was there? I had to fire her. The whole situation was becoming messy. But I knew I couldn’t tell Caroline that, and frankly, thinking about Ivy put me in a terrible mood, so I frowned in Caroline’s direction. “Are you ready?” I repeated, my tone firm.
A frown crossed her face, but she straightened up and smiled again. “Of course. Why else will I be here?” she asked.
Without a word, I pulled myself up from my seat, grabbed my phone and strolled towards the door. I pulled it open and walked out of it with Caroline walking behind me. We walked towards the elevator and I raised a finger to press the button. As we walked in, I wondered if my frustration and annoyance was evident on my face. Lately, I’ve been getting irritated and annoyed way too easy.
As the doors slid open and we made to step out, Caroline reached out and grabbed my palm, intertwining out fingers. I glanced at our entangled hands in mild irritation but said nothing. I understood why she was doing it, it was important that we kept up appearances in front of other people.
Our hands still intertwined, we stepped out of the elevator and walked out of the office building, with Caroline smiling and waving at a couple of people. Much to my relief, we eventually got to my car and climbed into it.
The car ride to my parents’ house was silent. I kept my gaze on the road, even though I was aware of the occasional glances Caroline was sending my way. She must have sensed that I was in no mood for her chatters, so, she said nothing and focused on scrolling through her phone instead.
We arrived at my parents house and I parked my car in the garage and unlocked the door. Caroline and I climbed out of the car and she walked over to stand beside me. Reaching out, she grabbed my hand again, and I sighed in exhaustion to which she sent me a warning glare. My parents had no idea Caroline and I were only getting married as part of a business deal. While I never let them think we were in love, I never really told them it was all business either.
Hand in hand, we walked to the door and I pressed on the doorbell. It rang and the door was immediately opened by my mother, a small woman, sporting grey hairs on her head, dressed in a pair of pants and a blouse. She had a bright smile on her face and was holding a tray of cupcakes.
“Devin!” she exclaimed, reaching over to hug me with her free hand.
I was more than happy to untangle my hand from Caroline’s so I could hug my mum. “Hey mum,” I greeted as we hugged.
She let go of me, turning to my fiancee. “Caroline! It’s so good to see you!” she intoned as they hugged.
“Maria, it’s so good to see you too,” Caroline answered in a pleasant tone.
“Come in,” My mum said, stepping aside for us to walk into the living room while she closed the door behind us. “I already have the table set,” she said as she led us to the dining table. “Your father is on his way.”
“Wow, this looks so nice!” Caroline exclaimed, as we stared at the dishes displayed on the table.
“Oh, I feel like I went a little overboard with the instructions I gave the cooks,” my mum said, waving her hands dismissively.
“Oh no, it’s so nice. I’m so glad you invited us Maria. At least, I get to see Devin outside of work,” Caroline answered in that chirpy voice she put on whenever we were with my parents. She sent me a smile and I sent her a glare instead, to which she rolled her eyes and turned away.
“Where is Cameron?” I asked my mother.
“Oh, he called to say he would be running late. Apparently, a friend of his is in a bad shape and needs help. He also said he can’t wait to see you,” My mum said with a loving smile.
My brows went up automatically at her last sentence. “He said he couldn’t wait to see me?” I repeated.
“Oh yes, he did! Isn’t that sweet?” My mum had a huge grin on her face.
“It is so sweet!” Caroline answered and I sent her another glare, and in reply, she smirked at me. To my mother, she continued, “But I didn’t know Devin and his brother got along like that.”
“Oh, they didn’t. But I think they are trying to now.”
I furrowed my brows. What did Cam mean when he said he couldn’t wait to see me? Unlike my mother, j wasn’t delusional enough to think that he meant he was going to be happy, or that we were trying to mend our relationship. I knew for a fact that Cam and I would absolutely die before agreeing to do that. So, what message was he trying to send? My teeth gritted together as I racked my brain but nothing came up. Eventually, I gave up. He was coming for dinner anyway. We’d see what trick he was trying to pull.
“Devin!” a gruff voice boomed and I turned in it’s direction. My father was huge, compared to my mother, and his grey hairs were in full bloom. He had a lot of laugh lines on his face, and an extremely deep voice. He walked down the stairs and in my direction. “How are you doing son?” he asked as he clasped me in a firm hug.
“Andrew!” Caroline exclaimed again. “We were just asking Maria about you!” she said as she leaned over to hug him. “You look so good.”
“Thank you, Caroline,” he answered, patting her back.
For a moment, I wondered if my parents getting attached to Caroline was a mistake, considering that our relationship was simply a business arrangement. But I pushed that thought aside. It was better that they were in the dark about that. The four of us took our seats at the table, but there was still one person missing – Cameron.
“Should we just go ahead and start without him?” I asked. “Who cares if he comes anyway?”
“Devin!” my mother chided in a shocked tone. “He is your brother! And we will wait for him. He is just running a bit late, that’s all,” she said and I said nothing in reply, simply gritting my teeth. My parents had refused to accept that Cam and I would never be close the way they wanted us to be. We used to be close, though, as kids. However, as we grew older, we simply grew apart – at least that’s one way to out what actually happened. Anyway, the point us, we could never be that close anymore. My parents, my mum must especially, were holding out to a lost dream.
The doorbell rang and the four of us automatically turned out heads in the direction of the door.
After a short silence, my mum said, “That must be Cameron. Devin, why don’t you get the door? After all, he could not wait to see you.”
I closed my eyes, gritted my teeth for a while. Then, I shoved my chair backwards, pushed my self up and walked in the direction of the door. I pulled the door open and there stood my younger brother, dressed in a pair of trousers and a rumpled shirt. “Welcome,” I said, my tone flat but sarcastic. “You are every early.”
“I am so glad you were the one who opened the door,” he said.
“What…?” Just as I was trying to process what his words meant, he raised his tightened fist and despite seeing it coming I could not avoid it when he smashed his fist into the side of my face.
The effort and the force made me stumble backwards, my hands automatically flying to my face. “What the hell man?!” I spat angrily.
