make a scene

IVY’S POV I stared at my phone, my blood boiling with fury as I read the words on my screen over and over and over again. My hands were trembling so violently, that even my phone began to shake. I was so angry, so very angry. I could not remember the last time I was this angry. How dare Devin? After everything, he thought he could just fire me, just like that? Without any explanation? What the hell? But underneath my anger, was fear and uncertainty. What was I going to do? How was I going to survive? My job and my life with Devin was all I had known for a very long time. My job was the only thing keeping my sanity intact and now, that was gone. And with a baby on the way, how was I going to survive? I threw my phone on the bed, aware that my eyelids were starting to water. I blinked furiously to fight the tears back, but they won and slipped out, slowly sliding down the sides of my face. I raised my hand to wipe the tears with the back of my palm. There was no use crying about this. Crying couldn’t solve anything. But I was angry, sad and frustrated, and I needed to lash out at something. Filled with a fresh wave of fury, I swung my legs out of bed and slipped my feet into my flip-flops, then, I padded towards the bathroom. I stood in front of the mirror, noting the eye-bags, my red eyes and my swollen cheek. With a sense of determination and defiance, I raised my hair up, tying it into a messy bun above my head and grabbed my toothbrush and paste. I washed my teeth, had my bath and then, walked back into my room to dress up. I simply slipped on a pair of jeans and a top. I was already fired, so what was the need to dress professionally, I thought to myself as I slipped my foot into a pair of converse. I managed to comb my hair and pack it into a ponytail. I walked towards my dresser and pulled it open, reaching out to grab my foundation and mascara. Midway, my hands froze and I slowly pulled it back. What was the point? I thought to myself wearily. I had no reason to dress up or even make myself look presentable. So, I had eye bags, so, my face looked swollen. Who cared? I certainly didn’t. Not anymore. With that thought in mind, I grabbed my phone and my purse and headed for the living room. On the table in the middle of the living room was my car keys with a note attached to it. I grabbed it, opening the note to read it. It was from Cam telling me he had someone bring my car over and asking me to get better soon. Even the sweetness of Cam’s actions was not enough to put me out of my bad mood or to make me feel better, but I made a mental note to thank him later. I walked out of the house, locking the door and walked towards the car. It looked fresh. Did Cam ask them to clean it? I would ask him later. I climbed into the car, shutting the door beside me. With a deep breath, I placed my head on the steering wheel and squeezed. I was angry, sad and frustrated, but I was also nervous. I was about to do something totally out of character, and for a split moment, I considered going back inside and pretending that all was still okay for a moment. But my anger was more than my nervousness and in the end, I jammed the key into the car and started it. No backing out now. I reversed the car out of the garage and drove out. All through the drive, I managed to keep a lid over my anger, flexing my fingers occasionally on the steering wheels and forcing myself to drive normally. I finally arrived at Watson Industries. I parked my car properly, climbed out of it and slammed the door close. Then, I stormed into the office building. As I walked in the direction of Sue, the receptionist, I noticed people sending me weird looks. I wondered if they knew I was fired, and if they knew why, but I ignored them. “Hey Sue,” I greeted as I approached her table, forcing my voice to be calm. She quickly rose to her feet. “Ivy!” she exclaimed, her voice shaky. “I…I didn’t know you’d be here…today. I…” There was something wrong with her. Why was she stammering? And why were her hands fidgeting? “Is Mr. Watson upstairs?” “Yes…yes…but he asked me not to…” she cleared her throat, “not to let you in,” she completed in a whisper but I heard her very clearly and I’m almost stunned into silence. “He asked you not to let me in?” I asked, my voice hard. So, everyone knew I was fired? Talk about an embarrassment. She shrunk back at the time of my voice, and the deadly glare I’m currently sending in her direction. “Yes, so, please leave before I…” she swallowed audibly, “call the security.” “Security?” I sucked in a deep breath. “Why will you do that? I’m just here to pick up a few things from my office, that’s all,” I said in a mildly pleasant tone while forcing out a smile. “I promise, I’m not here to make any scene. Just to get my stuff.” She eyed me warily, wondering if I was lying. But Sue and I had sort of established a simple relationship over the years, and I knew she would let me in. After all, she didn’t truly believe I’m the kind to make a scene. Just like I knew she would, she nodded her head in my direction. “Okay, you can go.” “Thank you, Sue. Mr. Watson wouldn’t even see me, I promise,” I said as I smiled and walked towards the elevator. I jammed the buttons in anger and the doors opened. I stepped in, clicked on the floor I was going and waited for it to take me there. In few seconds, I was on the floor of Devin’s office. With purpose and determination, I walked towards his office and knocked on the door. His voice flittered to my ears, asking me to come in. Immediately, I pushed the door open and stormed in. “What the actual hell, Devin?!” I burst out the moment I stepped into his office. His head jerked up, and his face clouded immediately he saw me. “Ivy?” he echoed, and there was a flash of anger on his face. “I thought I told Sue to not let you in.” Those words only enraged me even more. “What the f**k, Devin?” I demand. “You fired me?!” As usual, his face was as hard as that of a statute, his eyes blank and expressionless. “Yes, your services are no longer needed here.” “Are no longer needed?” For all my anger, the only thing I could do was state at him in disbelief. “What the hell?!” I asked again, speechless. “I cannot believe that you fired me! And for no reason at all! What the f**k man?” I could feel my eyes watering again, but I fight the tears back. I refused to shed tears in front of this monster of a man. “Miss Stone,” he began in a flat tone, “we appreciate your services to the company in the past years, and of course, we will compensate you accordingly. However, you are no longer of use to this company.” “I’m no longer of use to you? After knocking me up? Do you hear what you sound like right now, Devin?” Something flashed in his eyes, but it disappeared just as quickly as it come. One of the most surprising thing about Devin is how he managed to keep his composure even in the face of crises. His face remained stoic, his voice calm and his head clear. Meanwhile, I was over here losing my mind. “Miss Stone, I hope that you are sensible enough to know that causing a scene will not really bode well for you.” “Actually, no, I’m not sensible enough. And beside, what do you mean a scene? It’s just two of us here!” “Have a nice day, Miss Stone.” This time, the tears slipped down my face and I did nothing to resist it. The full realization of what my life had now become was finally hitting me in the face. I had an affair with my engaged boss and got pregnant, and now, he was firing me. I let out a shaky breath, aware of how messy the tears made my face. “I…I regret ever meeting you,” I said in a shaky tone, my voice breaking due to the sobs. “I wish I had never met you. I wish we never had an affair, and I wish I never got pregnant.” But this was no time for wishes now, was it? What was done was done. “After I have this baby,” I said, my voice steadier, “I will be happy to be rid of you. I never want to have anything to do with you again after this, you miserable piece of s**t!” I whirled around and stormed out of the office. Just as I was leaving, he called after me in a calm tone, “Close the door behind you” which made me break into more tears. I rushed into the elevator, jamming the buttons till the door closed. I quickly wiped off my tears with the hem of my top. The elevator doors slipped open and I stepped outside. Without a word to Sue who stood up immediately she saw me, I rushed out of the elevator and out of the door. I jumped into my car, started it and began to drive. It took me a while, but I finally got home. By then, my face was fear stricken. As I arrived at my house, I saw a male figure standing by my door. There was also a familiar car parked in my garage. I parked my car and climbed out of it. The man whirled around and it turned out to be Cam. He was holding a bouquet of flowers. He had a bright smile on his face but immediately he noted my appearance, the smile disappeared. “Ivy, what’s wrong?” This was the second time he was seeing me in this state. “I….I….I….” Fresh tears fell from my eyes and my voice trembled. I tried to search my purse for the keys but my hands were shaking. So he took it from me. With his hands around me, he unlocked the door to my house and guided me in. He dropped the flower on the table and led me to a chair. “Ivy, what’s wrong?” he asked again. I looked up at him, tears clouding my eyes. “I’m…I’m pregnant,” I managed to whisper.
