*Chapter 2: 7AM SHARP The alarm blared at 5:30am. Naomi slapped it off and sat up, heart already racing. Today was her first day at Mwangi Holdings. As Denis Mwangi’s executive secretary. Her mom was still asleep in the next room. The hospital had discharged her yesterday. The bills were still there, but at least she was home. Naomi stared at her reflection in the small mirror. Black blazer. White blouse. Black skirt. Professional. Nothing like the 19-year-old girl who used to sneak into his office with two coffees and a smile. _7am sharp._ That’s what he said. She arrived at 6:45am. The building was quiet. The receptionist gave her a guest badge. “20th floor, Ms. Wanjiku. Mr. Mwangi is already in.” Already in. Of course he was. Denis was always the first one in and the last one out. Even in university. The elevator ride felt longer this time. When the doors opened, his assistant was waiting. “Ms. Wanjiku. I’m Amina. I’ll show you around.” Amina was efficient. Cold. “This is your desk. Outside Mr. Mwangi’s office. You handle his schedule, calls, meetings, and coffee. He takes it black. No sugar. 7am and 3pm sharp.” Sharp. Right. At exactly 7:00am, the door to Denis’s office opened. “Ms. Wanjiku. My office. Now.” His voice. That same cold, CEO voice from yesterday. She grabbed her notebook and followed him in. He was already behind his desk, suit perfect, eyes on three monitors. He didn’t look up. “Close the door.” Click. “Your job is simple,” he said finally, still not looking at her. “Keep my schedule. Don’t mess up. Don’t be late. Don’t talk about the past.” Naomi swallowed. “Yes, Mr. Mwangi.” He looked up then. His dark eyes scanned her from head to toe. She felt it. That same pull she used to feel. “Good,” he said. “First task. I have a meeting with investors at 8am. The files are on your desk. Print them. Twice. And coffee.” “Yes sir.” She turned to leave. “Naomi.” She froze. He used her name again. “Don’t be late with the coffee.” She nodded and walked out, legs shaking. --- *FLASHBACK* _Two years ago. His apartment. Sunday morning._ “Two sugars, right?” Naomi asked, handing him a mug. She was in his oversized t-shirt, hair messy. Denis pulled her onto his lap. “I like it however you make it.” He kissed her forehead. “7am sharp tomorrow we have that presentation.” “I know,” she giggled. “Bossy.” “I’m not bossy with you,” he whispered against her neck. “Only with everyone else.” *END FLASHBACK* --- By 3pm, Naomi was exhausted. But she hadn’t messed up. Not once. The coffee. The files. The calls. She did it all perfectly. At 5:30pm, Denis walked out of his office. “You can go, Ms. Wanjiku.” “Thank you, Mr. Mwangi. See you tomorrow.” “Tomorrow. 7am sharp.” She nodded and hurried to the elevator. When the doors closed, she finally let out the breath she’d been holding all day. She did it. Day one, done. Her phone buzzed. Unknown number. *Message: “You did good today. But don’t think this changes anything. - D”* Naomi’s heart stopped. He still had her number. --- Across town, Denis stared at his phone. He’d deleted her number three years ago. Or so he thought. _You did good today._ Why did he send that? He threw his phone on the couch and poured a drink. _7am sharp tomorrow._ God help him. *THE END OF CHAPTER 2* ---
