Chapter 9: Giving In

423 Words
Mira tried to fight it. She really did. She told herself she wasn’t like this—wasn’t someone who got caught up in dangerous emotions, who let herself fall for a man like Adrian Carter. But Adrian was patient. Too patient. He didn’t rush her. He didn’t push. He simply showed up. Every morning with coffee, the scent rich and warm, placed beside her easel before she even realized he was there. Every night, standing behind her as she painted, his presence as steady as the city skyline beyond the windows. Every glance, every stolen touch—each one chipping away at the walls she had built around herself. Mira knew she was losing. One evening, after working late, she stepped onto the balcony of Adrian’s penthouse, craving fresh air. The city stretched out below her, lights twinkling against the darkened sky. But despite the breathtaking view, her mind wasn’t on New York. It was on him. The way he looked at her when he thought she wasn’t paying attention. The way his fingers lingered just a second too long when he handed her a paintbrush. The way her heart betrayed her every time he walked into the room. She closed her eyes, inhaling deeply, trying to center herself. Then, she felt him. Not his touch—just his presence, standing close behind her. "Thinking about running away?" His voice was low, smooth, curling around her like velvet. A faint smile tugged at her lips. "And if I was?" There was a pause, a charged moment where the air between them crackled. Then, his fingers brushed down her bare arm, slow and deliberate. "I’d have to chase you." Mira’s breath hitched. She turned to face him, her heart pounding against her ribs. His dark eyes locked onto hers, unreadable yet intense, drawing her in like a gravitational force. "You never chase anyone, do you?" she whispered, searching his face. Adrian’s jaw tightened slightly, but then his expression softened. He reached up, cupping her cheek, his thumb grazing along her skin with the gentlest touch. "Only you," he murmured. Something inside her unraveled. All the warnings she had whispered to herself—the reasons why this was dangerous, why she should stay away—dissolved in an instant. She knew she was losing the battle. And when he leaned in, his lips brushing against hers with quiet intensity, she didn’t pull away. She let herself fall. Falling into him, into the warmth of his embrace, into a moment that she knew would change everything.
