Chapter 6

ELARA Adrian's car smelled expensive, not in the overwhelming way Sebastian's car did. His car smelled warmer and softer, like he wanted people to trust him and feel comfortable. It felt weird and I didn't like it. “So,” Adrian started smoothly while he drove, “do you and Sebastian always fight like that?” I stared out of the window. “Like what?” “Like you want to stab each other.” I turned to him and observed him for a few seconds. “Were you following us?” I asked instead. He chuckled and shook his head. “He threw you out of the car, remember?” I faced the window again, this time totally ignoring him. He's obviously trying to pry and I wouldn't let him do that. The road stretched ahead quietly, the city lights blurred slowly, my heart still hadn’t settled from being abandoned in the middle of nowhere. My face turned pink immediately, Sebastian was insane, really insane. “You know,” Adrian continued casually and it pissed me off, “you should never be with a man that throws you off his car. You deserve better. “I got down myself,” I lied. “You did?” He asked, like he didn't believe me. I nodded. “I was angry and I needed space.” He hummed, like he knew I was lying and for some weird reason, I continued. “He begged me, you know? Sebastian might not be everyone's favourite but he loves me and I love him too.” Why was I defending the asshole? “Yet, he made you angry,” he taunted. “Couples fight all the time ,Adrian. Your girlfriend doesn't piss you off sometimes?” I said, suddenly annoyed. He smiled widely. I didn't like his smile. “You know, you're prettier when you're annoyed.” I blinked slowly. Was he trying to flirt with me? Of course. “You should stop that,” I deadpanned. “Stop what?” “Trying to flirt with me.” “I wasn't trying, I was simply saying you are pretty.” “And you are weird,” I stated, hoping he would get the message and shut the hell up. He did. ************************************************ By the time we got to my apartment, I was exhausted and I just wanted the day to end. “You live here?” Adrian suddenly asked. Of course he's trying to state that my apartment doesn't match his class. I already had enough today, could he not piss me off more? “Thank you for the ride Adrian,” I said instead, ignoring him. I moved to open the door but he got down immediately and opened the door instead. “You don't have to do that.” He smiled. “I am a gentleman, Elara.” I nodded with a stiff smile and got down and that was when I noticed his car. My stomach flipped. I smiled, for some reason relief flooded me immediately. See, I wanted to tell Adrian. He came back, I knew he would. Which was ridiculous because no, I absolutely did not know that. “Looks like your boyfriend came back for you after all,” Adrian said lightly and I smiled. Point made. “Goodnight, Adrian.” I said and walked towards Sebastian's car but the front door opened instead, and then he came down, standing tall, cold, and annoyingly handsome. His eyes flicked towards Adrian's car before landing on me. He looked furious. “Why did Adrian drop you off?” He asked. No apologies for dropping me in the middle of nowhere, I knew I wasn't going to get one but somehow I hoped. You're clearly hoping for too much ,Elara, my inner voice whispered. I folded my arms, “Nice to meet you too.” “I asked you a question,” he said sternly. “I heard clearly. I just chose to ignore you.” His jaw tightened slightly. “What are you doing here?” I shot back. He leaned against the door lazily. “I came to find out if you'd stopped being foolish.” I stared at him in disbelief. “Foolish? You left me in the middle of nowhere and you call me foolish?” “You provoked me,” he said casually. A laugh burst through me. “You are an asshole and I hope you know that.” “You are too emotional and I don't like it,” he coldly stated. “And you're a psychopath!” That actually made one of his brows rise slightly. Progress. “You are dramatic.” “You abandoned me!” He shrugged. “You challenged me.” “Normal people communicate, Sebastian, but you wouldn't know that because you are absolutely not normal. Not even in the least way,” I blurted out. “Normal people don't threaten contracts every five minutes,” he said casually, like my feelings weren't important. “Maybe because your contract is insane! It involves staying with you for God's sake.” “You say that like it's a punishment,” he said, anger slowly building. “That's because it is!” I blurted out. Silence followed, tension so thick I could cut it. “You know what,” I muttered, “I’m done.” “I think you've said something like that before,” he taunted. “I mean it this time,” I continued, “I don't want this contract anymore.” He walked closer to me. “You think I'm begging you for this, Ms Elara? You need this more than I do.” “Yet, you're the one in my home,” I retorted. He opened his mouth to talk but his phone chimed. He looked at it and smiled, the type of smile you give when you've won an argument. I raised my brows in confusion. My phone buzzed too. I took it out while still fuming, and froze. FAMILY COURT NOTICE: First hearing confirmed for 9.a.m.Tomorrow. Failure to appear may affect temporary guardianship ruling. My blood went cold, I looked at Sebastian slowly and the annoying smile was still fixed on his face. I got the message then, he was amused. cruel amusement. “Well,” he said mockingly, “are you still stepping away from the contract?” And suddenly, I had no answer to that.
