After Viola's body was taken to the vehicle, I couldn't bear the thought of her lying alone on that cold hospital bed and held her close.
I kept murmuring, "Viola, Dad will take you home. Viola, baby girl, wake up and look at Dad. I've missed you so much."
A teardrop fell on my hand; it was as if Viola had heard me and was saying her final goodbye.
I was filled with hatred, hating myself for trusting that Belle still had a heart, hating that she had never fulfilled her duties as a mother. I should have called the police when Viola sent me a message for help.
When I phoned Belle, she spoke nonchalantly, "Didn't you buy me at her age with your money? If you could buy me, why can't I make her a surrogate for Beck? Besides, Beck became lame because of her."
I once offered money generously to her family just to help her out, but she believed it was just a bargain? I might have filled her stomach, but I could never fill her greedy heart.
My silence seemed to have irritated her, and she became even more brazen in her slander of Viola, "She was the one who had feelings for Beck, but she told the teacher that he was harassing her. In the end, Beck was forced to drop out and had an accident that left him lame. I'm just letting Viola be a surrogate for him as a way to atone for her sins."
I retorted angrily, "Are you even human? Do you consider Viola your daughter at all? How could you believe a stranger's words over your own blood?"
But Belle scoffed at my words. "Beck is no stranger; he cares for me more than that ungrateful girl ever did. Even with a lame leg, he still makes plans for my future."
Then her joy turned into anger. "Viola only thinks about college and doesn't understand how hard I work to make money. She's been against me since she was a child. Is she really my daughter?"
It was Beck Walter again.
When I discovered that Belle was particularly concerned about Beck, I investigated and found out that he was the son of Belle's first love, Lester Walter.
He was no stranger to fighting and punishment and had stopped Viola after school. When Viola came home crying, I was so angry that I went to her school.
But Belle rushed over and quarreled with me there, disregarding Viola's feelings, "Phil Becky, isn't it enough for you to have destroyed me? Do you wish to ruin Beck as well? Beck only stopped Viola to ask about her studies; it wasn't harassment at all. Besides, Viola said she was willing to help students with poor grades. How can you distort the truth?"
After that incident, Viola lost interest in everything and often blamed herself for trivial matters.
I noticed she was ill and found the best doctor to treat her.
Thankfully, her condition had significantly improved.
But Belle took her away.
