Main Charatcer P.O.V:
I open my eyes after resting a while. Actually, I have no clue how long I slept, but I'm still here. In the same room I fell asleep in. I still don't know who I am. I still don't know where I am. So, I guess it wasn't a dream.
My arms feel a little lighter than before. I try moving my legs up and down. Then I move my arms by pulling them to my chest and then away from my chest. It still aches and still feels heavy. I turn to the side and put my feet onto the ground. Then I push myself forward trying to stand up... WHY AM I SO HEAVY.
Now I am on the ground. Not standing. I can't get back up. I can't scream for help either. Hopefully someone heard me fall, otherwise I'm stuck here for a while.
The sound of a door opens. I feel small cold hands touching my forearm. I don't know whether to freak out or not.
???: "Hey are you okay?"
I can't speak. That voice... It doesn't sound like the woman or man from last night. It sounds like a little girl... She pulls me up where I am able to sit on the ground. Then she moves my hair out of my face. I look up to see a girl with pretty brown eyes and pretty curly brown hair. Her skin is also a pretty brown color. Who is she? She doesn't look familiar.
The Girl: "Hey, I heard you fall. You're not hurt, are you?"
I shake my head in response to her question. She then smiles. She has... What is it called? They look like dots in her cheeks. Like an indent in them.
The Girl: "You're looking at my dimples... Mr. Andre said my dimples make others smile."
Dimples... That's right. Her dimples didn't make me smile. I actually feel nothing at all. No happiness, no empathy... but I decide to smile anyway. After smiling she smiles back even harder. It's kind of cute. She looks so young. Like, 7 or 8.
The Girl: "You look new. I haven't seen you before."
Again, with the new...
The Girl: "What's your name?"
I can't speak... This is so stressful. One thing I wish I could do I can't even do. I look back at the girl to see her smile gone. She looks confused or concerned. Is she okay?
The Girl: "I forgot. You can't speak, can you? I was like that when I came. I couldn't speak or walk. I found it scary. But it's okay. I'm here for you. I promise I will stick by your side."
Can I even believe that? She's just a little kid. But her voice sounds so calming.
The Girl: "My name is Lila by the way. L. I. L. A is how you spell it."
Hmm... What is my name?
Lila: "Mr. Andre gave me my name. It's because I couldn't remember my name when I came. They said it's normal. They named me Lila so that I could have a name. So, call me Lila"
She's smiling again. Since she couldn't remember her name, will it be the same for me? Will I also be given a name? Will I never remember my own name?
Lila: "I wish I can help you up, but I'm not very strong."
She stands up and walks towards the door. I'm guessing she's going for help...
Lila: "Stay there, I'm going to get Mr. Andre."
Mr. Andre. She's said that name a few times now. Who is Mr. Andre? The door opens back up and a man walks in. He's a tall white man with blond hair and light brown eyes. He's smiling.
Lila: "This is Mr. Andre."
Mr. Andre: "Hey, let me help you up."
He grabs me by my underarms and lifts me up slowly walking me backwards towards the bed. As I sit down, he moves my legs back onto the bed and then covers my legs with the blanket.
Mr. Andre: "You are still weak. You have to stay in bed until you are able to walk again."
Lila: "She can't speak"
Mr. Andre: "Is that so?"
He looks at me and gently grabs my hand. It looks like he's examining it. His hand feels warm. Aren't dead people cold? I'm cold. Am I dead? He lets go of my hand and grabs a flashlight from his jacket pocket. It looks like he's wearing some sort of science jacket. A white science jacket with a blue button on it. I can't even tell what the button says. He flashes the light into my eyes and makes me follow his finger while still shining the light into my eyes.
Mr. Andre: "Your eyes are violet. Such a strange eye color. It's almost inhuman."
Lila comes to his side and looks me in the eyes. I didn't even know my eyes were that color.
Lila: "And her hair is white"
Mr. Andre: "Her hair is white. A very strange color for a girl like you. You still look so young. You shouldn't have white hair."
Lila: "Do you know why her hair is white Mr. Andre?"
Mr. Andre: "No, I do not."
So, my hair color is very strange. Just as I thought. Violet also sounds like a very strange eye color... Am I not human? Is that why I am so cold and so strange looking?
Lila: "Well her white hair suits her violet eyes."
Mr. Andre: "They do look nice together. It actually makes her look very unique."
Lila: "Yes she's very pretty."
Pretty? I'm pretty? I want to say thank you, but I can't. I will just smile instead.
After Mr. Andre checks my body, a woman comes into the room. She was carrying a small table with a tray on it. She places the small table over my legs. The food smells good. I can't tell what it is, but it looks familiar. I pick up the spoon and take a scoop of the white fluffy looking stuff on the right side of the tray. It tastes very familiar, like something I've eaten before. It tastes so good. I look to my left to see Lila watching me eat. She's cute but kind of creepy.
Lila: "I'm sorry, am I making you uncomfortable?"
I want to say yes but I don't want to hurt her feelings. I shake my head and hand her a round shaped food that was on my tray. It had white powder on it and red stuff in the middle. She takes it, breaks it in half handing me half. I take it and take a bite of it. It tastes so sweet.
Lila: "It's so good. Thank you"
I nod.
-----
It's been a few days now since I've been here. Well, I think it's been a few days. I've watched the hour hand in the clock that's on the wall go around 6 times so far. It's so boring here. I feel like I am strong enough to stand up and walk around. I haven't seen Lila since the day I first met her. I hear the door open and it's Mr. Andre. He walks up to me and checks my hands, legs, and eyes again. This time he checks my mouth. He used a round long stick and a flashlight to check behind my tongue. Pushing my tongue down with the stick, makes me gag. He closes my mouth and throws away the stick, then turns around and looks back at me.
Mr. Andre: "Can you speak?"
Speak?
Mr. Andre: "Try speaking. Say something simple. Like Hi."
Me: "H... H... Hi"
I SPOKE....
Me: "W... Where am I?"
Mr. Andre: "This is the town's foster center."
Me: "Foster center?"
Mr. Andre: "Yes, this is a place where those who are lost come."
Me: "Lost?"
Mr. Andre: "Yes, sometimes people randomly appear here. They come lost and confused. Most can't speak when they come, others can't move or see. We take them here and we nurse them back to health."
Me: "Do you know who I am?"
Mr. Andre: "No, I do not. I met you for the first time the day you came."
Me: "Are you Lila's caretaker?"
Mr. Andre: "Caretaker?"
He's smiling but is it a happy smile or an awkward smile? Is caretaker the right word to use? I can't remember what it's called when a person is the one who cares for you and raises you. Did I have one before? I can't remember.
Me: "The one who takes care of Lila."
Mr. Andre: "Yes. I'm Lila's caretaker."
I really do wonder if I have one. If so, where are they?
My name... That's right, I can speak now. I should ask him if he knows what my name is. Maybe hearing my name will bring back my memory.
Me: "I have a question."
He smiles and looks back at me putting down the towel he had in his hand.
Mr. Andre: "What's your question?"
Me: "What's my name?"
His smile fades and he look at me with a serious face. The seriousness in his face worries me.
Mr. Andre: "I don't know what your name is."
Me: "Do I even have a name?"
Mr. Andre: "I'm sure you do."
I look down at my hands. They were pale. My palms are pink. I wonder what I look like in the face. I wonder how tall I am. What is my name? Why can't I remember it?
Mr. Andre: "Hey, don't look so worried. Everyone has a name. If we can't remember your name, then we will just give you a new one."
Me: "A new one?"
But why? If I have a name, why would I use a new name?
Mr. Andre: "Yes, a new name for now. Until we figure out what your real name is we will just call you..."
Call me... Call me what?
Mr. Andre: "Violet. How's that name sound?"
Violet? Violet because of my eyes?
Me: "I like that name."
Mr. Andre: "Good."
He hands me a pill and then pours a glass of water. Handing me the glass, I take the glass. I place the pill on my tongue and sip some of the water. It tastes so fresh, and it feels so cold. He takes the glass and puts it on the small table next to the bed. He then hands me a small pile of folded clothes.
Mr. Andre: "Put these on and when you are done let me know."
I watch him walk out the room. I stand up and put on the clothes he gave me. It is a pair of gray leggings with a lighter gray shirt and a blue cloak. The socks went a little over my ankle. The top of the socks is ruffly. I find the outfit kind of weird, but it is very comfortable.
I walk out the room. The building looks the same, but it is different from when I first came. I look outside the window in the hallway. It's still dark outside. I thought it was daytime. I hear a door open, and Mr. Andre and a woman walk out. It's the woman from a few days ago. She is a slim woman with short black hair and dark brown eyes. She looks kind of old but not very old. She must be somewhere in her late 30's or early 40's.
The Woman: "Hi there, you feel better?"
Me: "Yes"
Mr. Andre: "I named her Violet."
The Woman: "Violet? That's a pretty name. It matches your eye color actually."
Mr. Andre: "That's why I named her Violet."
The Woman: "Well hello Violet, my name is Pam."
Me: "Nice to meet you Pam."
Pam: "Nice to meet you too"
I smile at their smiles. Pam is a really pretty name. Her smile is really pretty too. Even though she does look tired. Mr. Andre says goodbye to the lady and walks down the hallway. I follow behind him. He stops by shoes on the floor and points to a small pair. I pick them up and put them on. He opens the door for me, and we both walk out of the building. The sky is still dark and empty looking. There is nothing in the sky. Is it night? I thought it was day, so where is the light?
Me: "Mr. Andre."
Mr. Andre: "Yes Violet."
Me: "Why is the sky so dark"
Mr. Andre: "It's always like this."
Me: "It is? I had thought the sky would be light during the day"
He doesn't respond. I had thought the clock said 11 last time I saw it. Was I reading it wrong?
Me: "Why is there no light in the sky if it's morning?"
He stops walking and looks at me. He looks worried. Was my question wrong to ask? Why is he looking at me like that?
Mr. Andre: "Morning? How can you tell it's morning?"
Me: "The clock in the room I was in. It said 11 last I saw it."
Mr. Andre: "That clock never moves, so it might be wrong."
It doesn't move? The entire time I was there it was moving.
Me: "It was moving, I was watching it every day, counting the days with it."
His face looks more upset than it did before.
Mr. Andre: "Clocks don't work here. Time never moves. It's always the same time, the same day. The sky never turns light, the sky is always dark. There is never a morning or night here. I don't know how you saw the clock move."
Time never moves? So, it will always be dark here?
I follow Andre to a small house. He walks up to the door and unlocks it motioning me to walk in. I walk in and it smells really nice. It smells good actually, like someone is making food. Lila walks out from behind a wall. She looks at me and smiles. She looks so small. She does look 7 or 8.
Lila: "HIIIII, YOU ARE COMING TO STAY WITH US?"
Mr. Andre: "She's now a new member of our family."
???: "Is that right?"
Who is that? A woman walks out from behind the wall and stands next to Lila. She is holding a big wooden spoon and a towel. I think she's drying the spoon. She has long wavy brown hair and blue eyes. She has a bunch of brown dots on her face. What are those called again? She is so pretty.
The Woman: "Hi there, my name is Kate. What's yours?"
Me: "My name is Violet."
Lila: "You named her Mr. Andre?"
Mr. Andre: "Yes, I did."
Lila: "Woahhhh, such a pretty name."
I smile trying not to blush. The door behind me opens and two boys walk in. They are taller than me. One is wearing goggles and the other has his hair up in a ponytail.
Goggles Boy: "Who is she?"
Lila: "She's a new member to our family."
Mr. Andre: "She's new here so be patient with her."
Goggles Boy: "Well hi."
They walk past Kate and out behind the wall. Then I hear another door open. It sounds like a door from behind the wall.
Kate: "Boys, dinner will be ready soon so don't go far."
Goggles Boy: "OKAY!"
I hear the door behind the wall close. Kate looks back at me and smiles.
Kate: "Those are the boys. The one with the goggles name is Gabe, and the one with the long hair is Luke."
Me: "Okay."
Mr. Andre: "Lila, why don't you show Violet where she will sleep."
Lila smiles and grabs my hand pulling me up the stairs into a room painted pink. For some reason the color bothers me. The room is not small but not big either. There are 2 beds in the room. One on the right side of the room and the other on the left. She pulls me towards the bed on the left.
Lila: "This is your bed"
Me: "Okay"
Lila: "And that one is mine."
She points to the bed on the right side of the room. My bed has nothing on it. It is empty.
Lila: "Hold on, let me get you a sheet for your bed, and a blanket."
She walks out the room. I sit down on the sheetless bed and stare at the wall. There's a clock on the wall. The clock was above a dresser. Wait... The second hand is moving. Lila walks into the room with sheets, a blanket and a couple pillows piled in her arms. I can't see her face with all the things in her arms. She drops it in front of the bed.
Lila: "Help me put the stuff on the bed."
After helping Lila make the bed, I sit down on it. She hands me a red piece of food. She's also eating one too.
Lila: "This is candy."
The word candy sounds familiar. I take a bite of the candy. It was so chewy and sweet.
Lila: "Don't tell Mr. Andre we are eating this upstairs."
Me: "Why?"
Lila: "We aren't supposed to. But we never get candy and I finally got some, even though I'm not allowed to have some."
Me: "Okay, I won't tell him."
She smiles and continues to eat the candy. I look back at the clock on the wall. The second hand is still moving. And the minute hand moves also. If the clocks are moving, then how come Mr. Andre said the clocks don't move?
Me: "Lila."
Lila: "Yes?"
Me: "Does that clock move?"
Lila: "What do you mean?"
Me: "Do the pointers on the clock move?"
Lila: "Oh, no it doesn't. Clocks do not work here. The clock is only there for decoration."
Me: "Do you know why clocks do not move here?"
Lila: "No, I don't. I asked Mr. Andre that a long time ago. He said he also doesn't know."
I don't get it. The clock is moving for me.
Why am I the only one who sees the clock moving?
