Knox changes the subject. "Well, if she can't keep him, then we'll just have to figure something out. He can stay with me for a little longer."
My heart warms. "Really?"
"Yeah. I'm kind of warming up to him."
My teeth sink into my bottom lip. "Thanks. I...don't even know what to say."
"You don't have to say anything."
I turn my body so I'm lying on my back. "Why do I have the feeling that you're dodging my questions about the fight?"
"I'm not," he claims, but even that sounds like a lie. "Look, I know you want to spend time with your mother, but I was wondering if I could stop by tomorrow so we can talk? It doesn't feel right to say anything over the phone."
"Sure," I say right away, concern surging through me again. "Mom works tomorrow, anyway. She'll be back by noon."
