I could feel walls trying to sculpt themselves around my heart like a suit of arms, determined not to let others in. I needed Lucy to back away; she was causing conflict within me. “Rio,” Lucy’s slow, cautious voice broke through my frantic thoughts, most of which were urging me to fly back home and kill them all. My hands ached to be covered in crimson vengeance. “Rio, I need you to look at me. Focus on me.” Lucy calls out again, as gently as humanly possible, but I can only feel the heat from my rage filling my heart, fueling my dark thoughts.
