Chapter 6: Shadows of Doubt

Xander I stood by the window of the small cabin where the group gathered after our encounter with Seraphine. I am reminded of that conversation. "There’s something… coming," Seraphine said softly, her blind eyes shinning in the firelight. "A betrayal... someone close to you, their true nature is not what it seems." The words hung in the air like a curse, chilling me to my core. Betrayal? I glanced at Rael, who avoided my gaze. His clenched jaw and tense posture spoke volumes, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more he wasn’t telling us. Seraphine shook her head slowly, her sightless eyes staring past us. "I see shadows... but no faces. The betrayal will be subtle, difficult to see until it's too late." My thoughts were a mess, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. Malachai was always one step ahead. His manipulations were already driving us apart. Rael had distanced himself from us after seeing Leona. He hadn’t said much since the meeting, his face a mask of anger and sadness. I knew all too well what secrets could do to a person, how they could poison everything. But there was something else at play here—something deeper, darker. A crackling sound interrupted my thoughts. I turned to see Ayla, her hybrid powers still unstable, practicing with fire magic. Her frustration was showing as sparks flew wildly. She was powerful, but I could sense the growing temptation within her. The darkness was calling to both of us, and it scared me how much I wanted to answer it. "You're going to burn this place down," I said, attempting a weak smile. She glared at me, her eyes a mixture of fire and storm. "I can control it. Mostly." "Mostly doesn’t cut it right now," I replied, crossing the room to sit near her. "We need control. We can’t afford to slip." She stopped, letting the fire die in her hands. "I know." Her voice softened. "But what if I can’t control it? What if I’m just like them?" "Like who?" I asked, even though I already knew. Her parents. The witches who had turned dark, losing themselves to their powers. Ayla looked out the window, her face hardening. "Like the people who destroyed everything I ever loved." Luna Sitting outside the cabin, I feel very uncomfortable. The mark on my wrist tingled, a constant reminder that there was more to my life than I’d ever imagined. Seraphine’s arrival had shaken everything, especially with the news that there was a traitor among us. Who could it be? Everyone had secrets, including me. But a traitor? It felt too real, too dangerous. Rael’s sudden distance wasn’t helping. I glanced over at him, pacing the edge of the clearing, clearly torn by something. Was it about Leona? Was it something else? Before I could dwell on it any longer, Seraphine appeared beside me, as silent as a shadow. Her face was calm, but her eyes showed the burden of knowledge she carried. "He's struggling," she said, following my gaze to Rael. "I can see that," I replied. "But he won’t talk to me." "He’s afraid," she continued, her voice like a soft breeze. "Leona’s presence stirs up old wounds. But it’s not just that. He feels the weight of the prophecy. He fears that his curse will destroy everything, including you." Her words stung. Rael and I had barely scratched the surface of whatever was happening between us, but I already knew how deeply I cared for him. The thought of him pulling away was unbearable. "How do I help him?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. Seraphine smiled faintly, her eyes full of knowledge. "You’ll find the way, Luna. But be careful. The shadows around you are growing darker, and trust will be tested." I felt a chill run through me. "The traitor... do you know who it is?" Seraphine shook her head. "The visions aren’t always clear. But beware of those closest to you. Shadows have a way of hiding where you least expect them." Her cryptic words left me more confused and unsettled than ever. Could it be Rael? Xander? Ayla? None of it made sense, yet I couldn’t shake the feeling that something terrible was coming. Rael’s POV Leona’s face lingered in my mind, her words echoing long after she’d left. Her arrival had stirred up emotions I thought I had buried long ago—anger, regret, pain. I couldn’t face Luna. Not right now. Not with everything I was hiding. The curse I carried was growing stronger, and every day it became harder to control the beast inside me. Leona’s words had only added to my torment. The bond we once shared, the battles we had fought together... those memories haunted me. She reminded me of a time when I had been reckless, willing to sacrifice everything for power. And now, standing on the brink of a war that could destroy us all, I feared I was walking the same path again. But Luna... Luna was different. She was light, hope. She didn’t deserve to be dragged into the darkness with me. And yet, every time I tried to push her away, the pull between us only grew stronger. Footsteps approached, and I didn’t need to look to know it was Luna. "Rael," she called softly, her voice full of concern. I turned, unable to hide the worry in my eyes. "You shouldn’t be here." "Neither should you," she replied, stepping closer. "But here we are." Her presence was both comforting and dangerous. Being close to her made me feel alive, but it also reminded me of the curse that could tear us apart. I wanted to protect her, but how could I protect her from myself? "I’m not who you think I am," I said, my voice raw with emotion. She frowned, confusion crossing her face. "What are you talking about? "The curse... it’s getting worse. I don’t know how much longer I can control it." She reached out, her fingers brushing against my arm. "You’re stronger than you think, Rael. You don’t have to face this alone." I stepped back, my heart pounding in my chest. "You don’t understand. This curse... it could kill you, but I won’t let that happen." Tears welled up in her eyes, but she held her ground. "I’m not afraid of you. I’m afraid of losing you." Her words hit me like a punch to the gut. I wanted to believe her, but deep down, I knew that the beast inside me was a ticking time bomb. And when it exploded, I didn’t know if there would be anything left to save. "Luna," I whispered, "you deserve someone better." She shook her head, stepping closer until she was right in front of me. "I don’t care about what you think I deserve. I care about you. And I’m not going anywhere." I stared into her eyes, I wanted to believe that we could make it through this, that I could control the curse. But in the back of my mind, I knew that time was running out. And when the beast finally broke free, I feared there would be no turning back.
