Chapter 22: Shadows of the Past

216 Words
Emilia walked through the quiet streets of Florence, her mind swirling with memories she had tried to bury for years. The weight of Luca’s return, their rekindled connection, and the uncertainty of the future pressed heavily on her chest. She stopped at the bookstore, running her fingers along the familiar wooden shelves. This place had been her refuge after he left—a sanctuary where she could lose herself in stories instead of drowning in heartache. “Lost in thought?” Chiara’s voice pulled her back to the present. Emilia turned, offering a small smile. “Just… sorting through the past.” Chiara leaned against the counter, arms crossed. “And by ‘past,’ you mean Luca Moretti?” Emilia sighed, nodding. “It’s different now. He’s different. But I still wonder… what if it happens again? What if I lose myself in him and he leaves?” Chiara softened. “You’re not the same person you were back then. And maybe… neither is he.” That night, as Emilia sat by her window, watching the stars scatter across the sky, she realized something. The past would always be there—but it didn’t have to define her future. She had a choice. And for the first time in years, she wasn’t afraid to make it.
