CHAPTER 13

702 Words
Nathan pov The first rays of dawn filtered through the gap in the curtains, painting a pale stripe across my face. I groaned, rolling over to escape the intrusive light, but sleep was no longer an option. My mind was already racing, replaying the events of the previous day, dissecting every mistake, every missed opportunity. I sat up in bed, my body stiff and aching. The remnants of the previous night's anxiety still clung to me like a shroud. I glanced at the clock on the nightstand: 6:00 AM. Too early to face the world, but too late to pretend I could still sleep. I dragged myself out of bed and headed to the bathroom. The reflection staring back at me was not a pretty sight. My eyes were bloodshot, my face pale and drawn, my hair a tangled mess. I looked like I had aged ten years overnight. I turned on the shower, letting the hot water cascade over my body, hoping to wash away the fatigue and the disappointment. But the water couldn't reach the knot of anxiety in my stomach, the nagging voice in my head that kept whispering, "You failed." After showering, I wrapped myself in a robe and headed to the kitchen. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, a welcome change from the spiced lamb of the previous night. Mariam was already there, humming softly as she prepared breakfast. "Good morning, Nathan," she said, her voice cheerful. "I made you breakfast...scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and a side of avocado toast." I managed a weak smile. "Good morning, Mariam. It smells delicious." "Sit down," she said, gesturing to the table. "I'll pour you a cup of coffee." I sat down at the table, feeling a sense of gratitude for Mariam's unwavering support. She didn't try to force me to talk about what had happened, but her presence was a comforting reminder that I wasn't alone. She placed a steaming cup of coffee in front of me, along with a plate piled high with scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, and avocado toast. I took a tentative bite, and the rich, savory flavors filled my mouth. "So," Mariam said, her eyes twinkling. "Are you ready to face the day?" I took a sip of coffee, considering her question. Was I ready? The thought of going back to the office, of dealing with the fallout from the failed deal, filled me with dread. But I knew that I couldn't hide forever. "I don't know," I said, my voice hesitant. "But I have to, don't I?" "That's right," Mariam said, her voice firm. "You have a company to run, people who depend on you. You can't let one setback define you." Her words echoed in my mind, reinforcing the resolve that had begun to flicker within me. I took another bite of the scrambled eggs, feeling a surge of energy coursing through my veins. Maybe today wouldn't be so bad after all. Maybe there were still opportunities out there, waiting to be seized. "Alright," I said, my voice gaining strength. "Let's do this." Mariam smiled, her eyes filled with pride. "That's my boy," she said. "Now, eat your breakfast. You need your strength." I finished my breakfast, feeling a renewed sense of purpose, thanked Mariam for her support and headed to my closet to get dressed. As I put on my suit, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. I still looked tired, but there was a new glint in my eyes, a spark of determination that hadn't been there before. I walked out of my apartment, ready to face whatever challenges the day might bring. The city was bustling with activity, the streets filled with people rushing to work, the air alive with the sounds of traffic and construction. I took a deep breath, feeling a sense of excitement mixed with trepidation. As I stepped into my car, I turned on the radio. The song that was playing was one of my father's favorites: "I Will Survive." I smiled, feeling a surge of confidence. He was right: business is like that. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. But you have to keep going. And I will.
