Sarah's Son

Chapter 48: "He's Sarah's son," Kael says. I stand in the doorway of the shed with the bullet around my neck and I don't say anything for a second. "Sarah doesn't have a son," I say. "He says she does." "He says. Kael, anybody can say anything." The man's on his knees in the gravel with his hands up and Jax's gun at his back. He's crying. Not the way a man cries when he's trying to sell you something. The ugly way. The way that comes out of a person who's been holding it in for a long time. "I'm not lying," he says. "I'm not. I've been looking for her for six years." Kael doesn't lower the shotgun. "Get up," he says. The man gets up. Slowly. Hands still up. "Turn around." He turns around. He's younger than I thought. Thirty, maybe. Dark hair. A face that's been outside a lot.
