He walks away.
I stand in the hallway with the crowd around me and his words sitting in my chest like a stone.
Kael's beside me.
"What did he say?"
"Nothing." I turn around. "Let's go home."

It starts the next morning.
Miss Okonkwo calls at seven.
"The state licensing board has scheduled an inspection of Ellie's House. They're claiming a complaint was filed alleging unsafe conditions and unlicensed residency."
"What complaint? Who filed it?"
"They won't say. But the inspection is Monday morning and they're bringing a lawyer."
I put my hand on the counter.
"And the bar?"
"I'm getting to that. The county has scheduled a fire inspection and a liquor license review. Both next week. And there's a third thing."
"What third thing?"
