Chapter 40:
"Get down."
Kael's already got me by the back of the neck and he's pushing me off the chair and onto the floor and the glass is coming in.
Not all at once. In pieces. The window in the front of the house shatters and the sound that comes after it is worse — a hard flat crack, then another, then another, and the glass keeps falling and the world outside keeps making that sound.
Ruthie's still at the table.
"Ruthie!" I'm on the floor and I'm reaching for her ankle. "Get down, get down, get down—"
She comes down. She comes down hard and I catch her and pull her under the table with me and Kael's already got his phone out and he's shouting into it.
