CHAPTER 40 THREE DAYS LATER, I still hadn’t left my apartment. I’d cleaned it six times, and with every surface sparkling, it was hard to justify picking up a cloth for a seventh go. When I wasn’t wiping or vacuuming, I’d alternated between staring at the wall and eating my emergency ice cream stash. I hadn’t called Nick, and he hadn’t called me. Did I still have a job? Even if I did, how would I be able to face Nick if I returned to Adler House? What do you say to a boss you almost kissed, accidentally told you were crazy about, and indirectly landed up in jail? “Sorry” wouldn’t cut it.
