CHAPTER 23 A PIT OF dread yawned in my stomach as I went downstairs the next morning. How could I have broken down on Nick? I was prepared for awkwardness over breakfast, but Nick didn’t mention my meltdown, and I certainly wasn’t about to bring it up. As was our custom in Virginia, I made him scrambled eggs, three slices of toast, and a glass of orange juice, just the way he liked it. Apart from the occasional comment about the state of the economy, he barely said a word as he ate.
