A New Chance

I step into the kitchen just as my phone starts ringing. Excited to see that it was Mr Miller for the interview, I answer. “Hello again Mr Miller. Thank you for accepting a video call.” I told him “Hello Ms Lianna, if this video call means I can finally take my wife on her world-wide vacation, then it is my pleasure.” He answered, with some humor in his eyes. Mr Miller looked to be in his mid 60s, he had dark brown hair with piercing gray eyes. His face was slightly creased, mostly around the eyes. He looked like someone who had spent his entire life smiling, without a worry in the world. “Well, I sure hope that will be the outcome of one of these calls. We can’t keep Mrs Miller from such a time now, can we?” I joked. “You can call me Lisa dear, please.” She responded. Lisa was a beautiful woman, her long blond hair flowed to her hips. She had light brown eyes with a perfect skin. As she smiled you could see the tenderness in her eyes. The same that your grandmother would show you. “It’s a pleasure meeting you both. When would you like to leave? Is there anything particular I would have to do while there, such as water the plants or take care of an animal?” I inquired. I secretly hoped they did not have a pet as I was hoping to be able to bring my dog along. “We were thinking of leaving on October third. In just a little over 2 weeks. We don’t have any plants to water, Lisa kills them all.” He added with a grin. Lisa looked at him with a fake scowl as she continued. “We would like for someone to take care of the house in general, as well as the yard. We have all the tools necessary for that.” “Does not sound too complicated, nothing I haven’t done before. How big is your yard?” I asked “The yard isn’t that big, we have a few acres of wood at the back of the house that we own. We saw on your social networks that you are a hunter. If you wish to bring your stuff along, we would not mind you hunting on our land.” Lisa offered. I couldn’t help but look surprised. “ I would love it too. There is a detail I would have to ask beforehand. I have a dog for emotional support. Would both of you mind if I brought him with me? I assure you both that he is well-trained and will not do any damages to your home.” I asked, scared that they would refuse, and I would be stuck here. “Absolutely bring him along. We used to own a dog until the poor thing passed away last April. We wouldn’t stop you from bringing it.” John answered. The relief on my face was immediate. I was finally going to be able to leave this godforsaken place. “Alright sounds perfect to me. When should I arrive? What do I need to bring with me?” I asked “If you could arrive on the first of October it would be good. As for what to bring, bring yourself and your clothes. The fridge and pantry will be stocked full for when you get here. After that you will be able to get groceries with your pay.” Lisa said. “Perfect, send me the information and I will see you first”. I bid them goodbye and ended the call. I couldn’t believe that I would be able to move out of here. Even if temporary, it should give me enough time to bounce back and find somewhere else to live. As I checked my phone, I realized that I had 6 missed calls from Anthony. That was not good. He was going to be p*ssed. I hurriedly called him back. “Anthony, I’m sorry I was passing the vacuum. I didn’t hear the phone ring”, I apologized. But what I heard on the other end of the phone made my blood run cold. It wasn’t Anthony that I was hearing. No, it was another woman moaning his name.
