Chapter 20: The Third Stirring

Brittany’s pulse still raced from the vision, her body trembling uncontrollably as Drew held her upright. His arms were strong, steady, grounding her in a way she didn’t understand. She could feel the vibration of his wolf through his skin, an almost electric hum, protective and fierce. Alpha Rowan stood slowly, his expression shifting from concern to calculation. “We need to move her somewhere safe.” Beta Corvin nodded. “The infirmary?” Gamma Thane shook his head. “No. Too exposed. Too many wolves coming and going.” Rowan’s gaze sharpened. “My office. Reinforced walls. Soundproof. And close enough to the Triad if anything escalates.” Drew didn’t wait for permission. He scooped Brittany into his arms, lifting her effortlessly. She gasped, startled, but her body didn’t fight him. She felt too weak, too shaken, too overwhelmed to protest. Her voice was barely a whisper. “I can walk…” “No,” Drew said, his tone low and final. “You’re not steady.” She wasn’t. Her limbs felt like water. Her vision still flickered at the edges. Every breath felt too shallow, too fast, too fragile. Bellatrix whispered, ‘Let him carry you. The protector bond demands it.’ Brittany didn’t understand the bond, but she didn’t argue. She rested her head lightly against Drew’s shoulder as he carried her out of the meeting room. Behind them, the elders murmured anxiously. “She saw him,” one whispered. “She felt him,” another breathed. “The Moon King is waking,” a third said, voice trembling. Their fear followed her down the hallway like a shadow. Drew carried Brittany into Alpha Rowan’s office and gently set her on the leather couch. She curled into herself, arms wrapped around her middle, trying to stop the trembling. Alpha Rowan closed the door behind them, locking it. The click echoed like a warning. “Tell me everything,” he said softly. Brittany swallowed hard. “I… I don’t know how to explain it. It wasn’t a dream. It was a vision. It felt like… like I was somewhere else.” Drew crouched beside her, eyes locked on hers. “What did you see?” She shivered. “A throne. Made of shadow. And someone sitting on it. He wasn’t awake at first. But then… then he opened his eyes.” Her voice broke. “They were silver. Bright. Alive. And he said my name.” Drew’s wolf snarled, a low, dangerous rumble. Alpha Rowan exchanged a look with Corvin and Thane. “The Moon King is aware of her.” Thane exhaled sharply. “This is earlier than expected.” Corvin rubbed his jaw. “The third stirring must have accelerated the connection.” Brittany’s breath hitched. “Connection? What connection?” Alpha Rowan sat across from her, leaning forward. “The Moon Luna and the Moon King are two halves of a divine balance. When one rises, the other wakes. You didn’t just see him, Brittany. You called him.” Her stomach dropped. “I didn’t mean to.” “You didn’t have to,” Alpha Rowan said gently. “Your awakening did it for you.” She pressed her hands to her face, overwhelmed. “I don’t want this. I don’t want any of this.” Drew’s voice softened. “I know.” But Brittany wasn’t sure anyone truly understood. She had spent her life trying to stay small, unnoticed, safe. And now she was the center of a prophecy that could shake the world. Her voice cracked. “What happens now?” Alpha Rowan hesitated. “The Moon King will seek you.” Brittany’s heart stopped. “Seek me? Why?” Corvin answered quietly. “Because you are his counterpart. His balance. His Luna.” She shook her head violently. “No. No, I don’t want to be anyone’s anything.” Bellatrix whispered, ‘Destiny is not a choice. It is a calling.’ Brittany squeezed her eyes shut. “I’m not ready.” Drew’s hand hovered near hers, not touching, but close enough that she felt the warmth. “You don’t have to be ready. You have to breathe.” She tried. She really did. But her breaths came too fast, too shallow. Alpha Rowan stood. “We need to stabilize her energy. The third stirring is volatile. If it spikes again, she could collapse.” Thane nodded. “We should call the healer.” Corvin shook his head. “No healer can manage Luna energy. We need someone who understands divine magic.” Alpha Rowan’s expression tightened. “Bellatrix.” Brittany’s eyes widened. “She’s already talking to me.” He nodded. “Then let her guide you.” Bellatrix’s voice filled Brittany’s mind, warm and steady. ‘Breathe, little one. Slow. Deep. Let the energy settle.’ Brittany inhaled shakily, then exhaled. The trembling eased slightly. Drew watched her with fierce intensity, his wolf pacing beneath his skin. “What does she need?” Bellatrix answered through Brittany’s lips, her voice layered with something ancient. “She needs grounding, protection, and most of all she needs time.” Drew nodded once. “She’ll have all three.” Alpha Rowan studied him. “Your protector bond is stronger than expected.” Drew didn’t look away from Brittany. “It’s not optional.” Alpha Rowan’s voice softened. “No. It isn’t.” Outside, in the forest, Bianca’s sobs finally quieted. She lay curled in the dirt, naked, shaking, her body aching from the violent shift. Her mate, her fated mate, had rejected her. She had never felt pain like this, not even when her mother died, not even when she broke her arm at thirteen, not even when she failed her first combat trial. This was soul-deep agony. Her wolf whimpered inside her, wounded beyond repair. Bianca wiped her face with trembling hands, smearing dirt, mascara, and tears across her cheeks. She forced herself to sit up, though her muscles screamed in protest. Her voice was a broken whisper. “Why? Why would he reject me?” But she already knew. Because she wasn’t a Luna... wasn’t the chosen. She was made to feel unworthy all her life. Her breath hitched. Rage flickered beneath the grief. “This is Brittany’s fault,” she whispered, her hands curling into fists. “She ruined everything.” Her wolf growled weakly. Bianca’s eyes hardened. “I’ll make her pay.” Back in Alpha Rowan’s office, Brittany finally steadied her breathing. The tremors eased. Her heartbeat slowed. But the fear didn’t fade. She looked at Drew, her voice barely audible. “What if he comes for me?” Drew’s wolf surged, eyes glowing gold. “He won’t touch you.” Alpha Rowan stepped closer. “We will protect you. The Triad. The pack. And Drew most of all.” Brittany swallowed hard. “I don’t want anyone hurt because of me.” Alpha Rowan shook his head. “This isn’t your fault. This is prophecy.” Bellatrix whispered, ‘The world shifts, little one. But you will not face it alone.’ Brittany exhaled shakily. For the first time since the crescent appeared, she felt the faintest flicker of something she hadn’t felt in days. Not hope, nor strength. But the smallest spark of not being alone. Her breath caught in her throat. Her eyes widened. “Oh no… I can’t believe this is happening to me.” Bellatrix whispered, ‘The third stirring is only the beginning.’ Brittany pressed her palms against her eyes, trying to steady her breathing, but the room felt too small, too warm, too full of eyes watching her unravel. She could feel Alpha Rowan’s gaze, Beta Corvin’s tension, Gamma Thane’s unease, and Drew’s wolf pacing beneath his skin like a storm waiting to break. The air itself felt charged, humming with something ancient and electric. Bellatrix whispered again, softer this time, ‘The third stirring is only the beginning. You must not fear it.’ But Brittany did fear it. She feared everything. The crescent. The prophecy. The Moon King’s voice. Bianca’s scream. The way Drew’s wolf reacted to her, as if she were something fragile and sacred. She curled her knees up, hugging them to her chest. “I don’t understand any of this,” she whispered. “I don’t know how to be what everyone says I am.” Alpha Rowan stepped closer, his voice gentler than she’d ever heard it. “You don’t have to understand it. You don’t have to be anything today. You survived the third stirring. That alone is extraordinary.” Corvin nodded. “Most Luna vessels don’t awaken this quickly. Or this strongly.” Thane added quietly, “And none have ever woken the Moon King this early.” Brittany’s stomach twisted. “That’s not comforting.” Drew moved closer, sitting on the floor beside the couch so he was level with her. His presence was grounding, steady, warm. “You’re not alone,” he said softly. “Not now. Not ever.” She looked at him, eyes wide and frightened. “Why do you keep saying that?” Drew hesitated, his wolf pushing forward, eyes flickering gold. “Because my wolf won’t let me leave you.” Her breath caught. “Why?” He didn’t answer. He couldn’t. His wolf was too close, too protective, too fierce. But Brittany felt the truth in the air between them, something binding, something ancient, something she didn’t yet have a name for. Alpha Rowan watched the exchange with a knowing expression, but he didn’t speak. Not yet. Outside, a distant howl echoed through the forest, Bianca’s grief, sharp and broken. Brittany flinched, guilt stabbing through her chest. “She hates me,” Brittany whispered. Alpha Rowan shook his head. “She hates the truth. Not you.” But Brittany wasn’t sure there was a difference anymore. Bellatrix’s voice returned, stronger now: ‘The world shifts, little one. But you will rise. And when you do, the King will rise with you.’ Brittany’s whole body trembled. She didn’t feel like a rising Luna. She felt like a girl drowning in destiny.
