Chapter13: Breaking the Mask

1596 Words
The crowd stood there so quiet that Brittany could hear every gasp. Bianca’s shove had failed, her smirk faltering as Brittany stood firm. For years, humiliation had been easy, effortless. Brittany had been the safe target, the invisible girl no one defended. But now, the balance was shifting, and Bianca could feel it slipping through her fingers like sand. “Fight me,” Bianca demanded, her voice sharp and desperate. “If you think you’re strong, prove it.” Shock rippled through the pack. No one challenged Bianca openly, not with Drew watching, not with her status, not with the future she believed belonged to her. But Brittany’s silence was worse than defiance. She didn’t move. She didn’t speak. She stood there, chest rising and falling, eyes locked on Bianca’s. The tension thickened. Even the wind seemed to pause. Then it happened. Brittany’s vision blurred, her body trembling with fear and awe as heat surged through her veins. The whispers of Bellatrix grew louder, no longer confined to her mind. 'Do not bow. Do not break. Show them who you are.' Her eyes blazed silver. The pack recoiled, murmurs breaking into shouts. “Did you see that?” “Her eyes…” “That wasn’t normal.” But it wasn’t just her eyes. A surge of energy rippled outward, shimmering faintly around her body. A luminous aura wrapped her in silver light, pressing against the crowd like a storm about to break. Wolves who had laughed moments before stumbled back in awe, instincts screaming that they were standing before something rare, possibly ancient. Bianca stumbled too, fear flickering across her face. Her bravado cracked, revealing the panic beneath. She had wanted to expose Brittany as weak, but now she was the one exposed. Drew’s jaw tightened, his gaze fixed on Brittany with something new. Not mockery. Not dismissal. Recognition. A wary understanding that something powerful had awakened. Edward and Henry exchanged uneasy glances, unsettled by the force in the air. Even the instructors paused their drills, their attention drawn to the silver glow pulsing around Brittany. Brittany’s breath came ragged, her fists clenched at her sides. She hadn’t meant to reveal it, hadn’t meant to let Bellatrix slip through. But the wolf was rising, clawing at the edges of her control, refusing to be hidden any longer. Bianca’s voice cracked as she tried to recover. “She’s dangerous!” she shouted, trembling. “She’s not one of us!” But the pack wasn’t laughing anymore. They were watching Brittany, their whispers louder than Bianca’s accusations. Some stepped back. Some moved closer. All of them staring at Brittany. Brittany felt their attention like heat against her skin. She wanted to run, to hide, to bury the glow that wrapped around her. But Bellatrix’s voice pressed through her fear. 'Strength is not shame. You were never meant to kneel.' The aura flickered, then slowly dimmed as Brittany forced her breathing to steady. The silver in her eyes faded, though not completely. A faint shimmer remained, like moonlight refusing to leave. Bianca took another step back, her mask cracking completely. Her friends hovered behind her, unsure whether to comfort her or flee. Drew didn’t move. His gaze stayed locked on Brittany, unreadable and intense. The crowd finally began to disperse, though many lingered long enough to steal one last glance at Brittany. The air buzzed with whispers, speculation, and fear. That night, back in the basement, Brittany collapsed onto her cot, her heart pounding. Her hands shook as she pressed them to her chest, feeling the remnants of the aura still humming beneath her skin. “They saw,” she whispered. “Everyone saw it.” 'Good,' Bellatrix answered, fierce and unyielding. 'The mask is breaking. Soon, they will know the truth.' Moonlight poured through the window, silver and strong, wrapping Brittany in its glow. She closed her eyes, tears slipping free. The pack had seen her wolf. They had felt her aura. Nothing would ever be the same again. Brittany lay awake long after the moon climbed high, her breath uneven as she tried to calm the trembling in her limbs. The basement had always been a place of stillness, a place where she could disappear. Tonight, it felt different. The shadows seemed to watch her, the air charged with the remnants of the power she had unleashed. Her hands curled into the thin blanket, gripping it tightly. She could still feel the silver glow beneath her skin, faint but present, like embers refusing to die out. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the crowd’s faces—shock, fear, awe. She saw Bianca’s expression crumble. She saw Drew’s gaze sharpen with something she couldn’t name. Bellatrix lingered close, her presence warm and steady. 'The moon does not reveal lightly. It shows what must be seen.' Brittany swallowed hard. “I didn’t mean to show them,” she whispered. “I didn’t want this.” 'Want is irrelevant,' Bellatrix replied. 'Destiny rises when it must.' Brittany turned onto her side, staring at the small window where moonlight spilled across the floor. Her heart thudded in her chest, heavy with fear and confusion. She had spent her entire life trying to stay small, trying to avoid attention, trying to survive quietly. Now the pack had seen her strength, her aura, her wolf. She didn’t know how to return to the shadows. Above her, footsteps echoed through the pack house. Voices murmured, too faint to understand, but she knew they were talking about her. The training grounds incident had spread faster than any rumor Bianca had ever started. Brittany could feel the shift in the air even down here, tucked away from the world. She pressed her palm against her chest, feeling the warmth pulse beneath her ribs. It wasn’t fading. It wasn’t weakening. It was growing. 'You are awakening,' Bellatrix murmured. 'The pack senses it. They fear what they do not understand.' Brittany closed her eyes, letting the words settle. She didn’t want to be feared. She didn’t want to be seen as dangerous. She didn’t want to be anything except safe. But safety had never been hers, not truly. Not in this pack. Not under Bianca’s cruelty. Not under the weight of her own silence. Her breath trembled. “What if they hate me?” 'Some will,' Bellatrix answered. 'Some already do.' 'But others will see the truth. Power reveals hearts.' Brittany didn’t know what that meant. She didn’t know whose hearts would be revealed. She didn’t know who would stand with her or who would turn away. But she knew one thing with absolute certainty: she could no longer pretend to be the girl she had been. The next morning arrived too quickly. Brittany forced herself out of bed, her limbs stiff from a restless night. She moved through her chores with quiet focus, but her mind kept drifting back to the training grounds. Every movement felt heavier, as if the world had shifted beneath her feet. When she stepped into the hallway, she froze. Two pack members stood near the stairs, whispering urgently. They didn’t notice her at first, but their words carried clearly through the quiet space. “She didn’t just stand there,” one said. “She glowed.” “I saw it too,” the other replied. “It wasn’t normal. It felt powerful.” “Alpha Rowan needs to know.” Brittany’s breath caught. Her pulse quickened. She stepped back into the shadows, her heart pounding. She didn’t want him involved. She didn’t want his attention, nor want anyone to look at her the way they had yesterday. The pack members moved on, their voices fading as they climbed the stairs. Brittany pressed her back against the wall, trying to steady her breathing. Bellatrix’s presence rose again, calm and unwavering. 'You cannot hide from truth. The moon has marked you. They will see it, whether you wish it or not.' Brittany swallowed hard and forced herself up the stairs. She needed to work. She needed to keep moving. She needed to pretend everything was normal, even if her world had cracked open. The moment she entered the main hall, conversations halted. Heads turned. Eyes widened. Brittany felt the weight of their stares like a physical force pressing against her skin. She kept her gaze lowered, her steps steady, but her pulse raced. Near the dining hall, Bianca stood with her friends, her posture rigid. Her face was pale, her eyes sharp with lingering fear. She tried to laugh when someone spoke to her, but the sound was brittle. Her gaze flicked toward Brittany with a mixture of anger and dread. “She’s dangerous,” Bianca whispered loudly, ensuring everyone heard. “She shouldn’t be here.” Her friends exchanged uneasy glances. Even they seemed unsure whether to agree. Brittany didn’t linger. She moved past them, her breath tight, her chest warm with Bellatrix’s presence. Drew stood near the doorway, watching her with an expression she couldn’t decipher. His gaze held confusion, curiosity, and something deeper, something that made Brittany’s stomach twist. He didn’t speak. He just stared at her. Brittany hurried down the hall, her thoughts tangled. Brittany wasn’t sure what Drew saw in her now, or how the pack would interpret what they witnessed. Bianca’s next move was impossible to predict, and the uncertainty pressed against her ribs like a weight she couldn’t shake. But Brittany knew one thing. The pack's mask had splintered into a thousand pieces. And the pack would never see her as a basement rat again.
