Chapter 9: The Rising Power

The pack house felt different the next morning. Brittany sensed it the moment she stepped into the hallway. Conversations that usually flowed freely were quieter. Footsteps that normally echoed with confidence felt hesitant. Even the air seemed heavier, as if the walls themselves were holding their breath. She kept her gaze low as she walked toward the kitchen, her hands clasped in front of her. She did not want attention. She did not want anyone looking at her the way they had yesterday. But she could feel it anyway. Eyes on her. Curious. Unsettled. Watching. Bellatrix stirred inside her, a soft hum beneath her ribs. ‘They are beginning to sense the shift.’ “I do not want them to,” Brittany whispered. ‘You cannot hide what the moon has awakened.’ She stepped into the kitchen, expecting to be ignored as usual. Instead, the room fell strangely quiet. A few pack members glanced in her direction, then quickly looked down at their plates. One woman nudged her son’s shoulder, whispering something that made him straighten in his seat. Brittany’s stomach tightened. She moved to the counter and began preparing breakfast trays, her hands trembling slightly. She tried to focus on the motions she had done a thousand times before. Bread. Fruit. Water. Plates. But her senses were too sharp. She could hear the scrape of forks, the soft thud of boots in the hallway, the faint rustle of clothing as someone shifted in their chair. She could hear her own heartbeat. But she could also hear someone else’s. A heavier rhythm. Stronger. Closer. She turned her head just as Alpha Rowan stepped into the doorway. The room went still. He was a tall man with broad shoulders and a presence that filled any space he entered. His dark hair was streaked with silver, his jaw set in a firm line. His eyes, sharp and assessing, swept across the room before landing on her. Brittany froze. Alpha Rowan rarely looked at her. She was beneath his notice, a burden the pack tolerated out of obligation. But today, his gaze lingered. Not with disdain. Not with irritation. With something else. Something like recognition. Her breath caught. She lowered her head quickly, gripping the edge of the counter to steady herself. For a moment, she could not breathe. It felt as if the entire room leaned toward her, waiting for her to make a mistake, waiting for her to reveal something she did not understand herself. The warmth in her chest pulsed once, faint but undeniable, and she pressed her hand against her ribs as if she could smother it. She wished she could fade into the walls, wished she could become invisible again, but the air around her felt charged, alive, as if the moonlight from the night before still clung to her skin. Her palms were damp. Her knees felt weak. She could feel the weight of his stare like a hand pressing between her shoulder blades, urging her to lift her head even though she could not. Bellatrix whispered, ‘He feels it.’ “Feels what?” ‘The shift in your aura. The moon’s claim. The awakening of your wolf.’ “He cannot know.” ‘He does not know. But he senses. And sensing is enough to make him uneasy.’ Alpha Rowan stepped further into the kitchen, his boots heavy against the tile. He spoke to no one at first, simply observing. Brittany could feel his gaze on her again, lingering like a weight between her shoulder blades. She felt exposed, as if he could see the warmth pulsing beneath her skin. Finally, he addressed the room. “Training will begin early today. No excuses.” His voice was steady, but Brittany heard something beneath it. A tension. A strain. As if he were trying to reassert control over something slipping from his grasp. He turned to leave, but paused. His eyes flicked toward her one last time. Then he walked out. The moment he was gone, the room erupted into whispers. “What was that?” “He never looks at her.” “Do you think he knows?” “Knows what? She is nothing.” “Yesterday did not look like anything.” Brittany’s cheeks burned. She grabbed the tray she had prepared and hurried out of the kitchen, her heart pounding. Her breath came in shallow bursts, as if the walls were closing in around her. She could feel the whispers clinging to her like smoke. She did not want this attention. She did not want their whispers. She did not want their fear. She wanted to disappear. But the moon refused to let her. Training began earlier than usual. The field was still damp with morning dew, the grass cool beneath Brittany’s feet as she carried the water buckets to their usual place. She kept her head down, hoping to blend into the background. But the pack was watching her. Bianca stood with her arms crossed, her expression tight. She looked as if she had not slept well. Drew stood beside her, his jaw clenched, his eyes following Brittany’s every movement. Edward and Henry whispered to each other, their glances sharp and uneasy. Brittany set the buckets down and stepped back, her hands trembling. She could feel the tension in the air, thick and suffocating. Even the birds seemed quieter, as if the forest itself sensed the shift inside her. Bellatrix murmured, ‘They fear what they do not understand.’ “I do not want them to fear me.” ‘You cannot control their fear. Only your truth.’ Alpha Rowan arrived moments later, his presence commanding immediate silence. He surveyed the field, his gaze sweeping across the pack before settling briefly on Brittany again. She felt the weight of it like a hand pressing against her chest. Her breath hitched. Her fingers curled into her palms. He began issuing orders, his voice crisp and authoritative. The pack moved quickly, eager to obey. Brittany stayed near the edge of the field, watching, waiting, hoping no one would call her name. But someone did. “Brittany.” She stiffened. Drew stood a few feet away, his expression unreadable. “Come here,” he said. Her stomach dropped. She approached slowly, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. Drew studied her for a long moment. “What happened yesterday?” She swallowed. “Nothing.” “That was not nothing.” Bianca stepped forward, her voice sharp. “She is lying. She did something. I saw her eyes. They changed.” “They did not,” Brittany whispered. Bianca scoffed. “You expect us to believe that? You grabbed a boy twice your size like he was a twig.” “It was an accident.” Drew’s gaze narrowed. “Accidents do not look like that.” Brittany’s breath trembled. She took a step back. “I do not know what happened.” Bellatrix whispered, ‘Do not shrink or cower. You are not prey.’ But Brittany felt like prey. Surrounded. Cornered. Exposed. Alpha Rowan’s voice cut through the tension. “Enough.” The pack parted as he approached. His gaze moved from Drew to Bianca, then finally to Brittany. “Step forward,” he said. Her heart stopped. She obeyed, her legs trembling. Alpha Rowan studied her with a depth she had never seen in his eyes before. Not anger. Not disgust. Concern. And something else. Recognition… memory. “Look at me,” he said quietly. She lifted her gaze. The moment their eyes met, something shifted in the air. A faint hum vibrated beneath her skin. The warmth in her chest pulsed once, twice, then steadied. Alpha Rowan inhaled sharply. The pack murmured incoherently. Brittany’s breath caught. Bellatrix whispered, ‘He feels the moon’s mark on you.’ Alpha Rowan stepped back, his expression tightening. “Training is dismissed.” The field erupted in shouts of confusion. “What? Already?” “Why?” “What is going on?” But the Alpha did not explain. He turned and walked away, his shoulders tense, his steps quick. Brittany stood in place, her heart pounding. Drew stared at her, suspicion deepening. Bianca looked furious. Edward and Henry exchanged alarmed looks. Bellatrix’s voice curled through her mind. ‘The Alpha is uneasy. He senses the truth even if he does not understand it.’ “What truth?” ‘That you are not what they think you are.’ She pressed a hand to her chest, feeling the warmth there, steady and alive. “I do not want this,” she whispered. ‘You cannot run from destiny.’ “I am not ready.” ‘No one ever is.’ Brittany turned and walked back toward the pack house, her steps slow, her breath unsteady. The whispers followed her. The stares clung to her. The air felt heavy with something she could not name. She had spent her whole life trying to disappear. But now the Alpha had seen her, and nothing would ever be the same.
