The whispers had grown sharper overnight. By morning, Brittany could feel them clinging to her skin like a second layer. Every step she took felt heavier, as if the entire pack had placed stones in her pockets. As she walked through the kitchen, Vivienne’s voice floated toward her, warm, proud, and meant only for one daughter.
“Bianca, you are everything this pack needs,” Vivienne said, brushing a strand of hair from Bianca’s face. “Victor and Alina will be so proud when Drew chooses you.”
Brittany froze in the doorway, fingers tightening around the counter. Her mother’s words were a knife, cutting deeper than Bianca’s smirk ever could. She wanted to speak, to remind Vivienne she existed too, but the words died before they reached her lips. She swallowed them like she always did, letting them settle in the quiet place inside her where all her unspoken thoughts lived.
Bianca caught her eye and smiled sweetly, the kind of smile that hid poison beneath sugar. “Do not hover, Brittany. You are making the room look uneven.”
Vivienne did not correct her.
Marcus entered the kitchen just in time to see Brittany flinch. His jaw tightened, but he said nothing. Vivienne’s hand rested lightly on his arm, a silent reminder of the role he was expected to play.
Brittany slipped out the back door before her voice could betray her.
At school, the rumors had spread like wildfire. Brittany barely made it through the front doors before a boy shouted, “Basement rat.” Another stuck out his foot, sending her books skidding across the floor.
Laughter erupted, bouncing off the lockers.
“Did you hear?” a girl whispered loudly enough for Brittany to hear. “She confessed to Drew. She actually thought she could be Luna.”
The words burned. Brittany gathered her books quickly, cheeks hot, throat tight. She kept her head down, moving fast, wishing she could vanish into the walls. She wished she could melt into the floor and never be seen again.
Bellatrix stirred. 'You should let me handle them. I can make them regret every word.'
“No,” Brittany whispered. “I cannot.”
'You can. You do not believe it yet.'
Brittany ignored her and kept walking.
By the time she reached the training grounds, her humiliation had become entertainment. Drew stood tall, Edward and Henry flanking him, Bianca glowing at his side. The future Alpha, Beta, and Gamma, the pack’s golden trio. They looked like they had stepped out of a storybook, perfect and untouchable.
“Do not forget, Brittany,” Bianca called, her voice carrying across the field. “Omegas fetch water. That is all you are good for.”
Drew smirked. Edward chuckled. Henry looked away, guilt flickering in his eyes before he hid it. A few of Marcus’s quiet helpers, older omegas who had slipped Brittany food before, watched with tight jaws but said nothing. Vivienne’s rules held their tongues.
The rest of the trainees laughed as Brittany carried buckets until her arms ached. Sweat dripped down her temples, her muscles screaming, but she kept moving. She had no choice.
When she stumbled, someone shoved her from behind. She fell hard, the bucket tipping, water splashing across her clothes. Mud clung to her knees, streaked her hands. The roar of laughter was deafening.
“Look at her.” Bianca’s voice rang out, triumphant. “Basement rat cannot even carry water.”
Brittany’s vision blurred, but a flicker of resilience sparked inside her. She scrambled to her feet, heart pounding, humiliation burning hotter than the sun. She fled before the tears could fall, running until the training field disappeared behind her.
She did not stop until the basement swallowed her whole.
She pressed her face into her blanket, sobs shaking her body, the words basement rat and " nothing " echoing relentlessly in her mind. Her chest hurt. Her throat felt raw. Her eyes burned. She curled into herself, trying to make her body smaller, trying to disappear.
Bellatrix whispered, 'Let it out. You are allowed to break. You are allowed to feel.'
“I am so tired,” Brittany choked. “I am tired of being nothing.”
'You are not nothing. You are surrounded by people who cannot see.'
Brittany did not answer. She could not.
The basement was cold, the kind of cold that seeped into her bones. The air smelled faintly of damp stone and old laundry. Shadows stretched across the walls, long and thin, like fingers reaching for her. She pulled the blanket tighter around her shoulders, but it did little to warm her.
She lay there for a long time, listening to the muffled sounds of the pack above her. Laughter. Footsteps. Voices. Life. A life she was never invited to join.
Then the moonlight touched her.
It spilled across the floor through the small window, soft and steady. It reached her like a gentle hand, warm and comforting. Brittany lifted her head slowly, drawn to it without understanding why.
She moved closer, kneeling beneath the glow. The light wrapped around her, soothing the ache in her chest. Her breath steadied. Her heartbeat slowed.
Bellatrix’s voice softened. 'The moon sees you. Even when they refuse to.'
Brittany pressed her palm to the cold stone wall, grounding herself. “Why does it feel like it is calling me?”
'Because it is.'
The light brightened, shifting from silver to a soft, ethereal glow. Brittany inhaled sharply. The air tasted different, charged with something ancient and wild. Her skin tingled. Her pulse synced with a rhythm she did not understand.
A shadow flickered across the moonlight, faint and distant, like a presence watching from far beyond the forest. Brittany blinked, but it vanished.
Still, she felt it. A pull. A thread. A connection she could not explain.
She stayed kneeling long after the glow faded. Her body felt lighter, as if the moon had lifted some of the weight she carried. Her mind felt clearer, though she did not know why.
She lifted her hand, turning it in the dim light. Nothing glowed now. Nothing shimmered. She looked like the same girl the pack mocked, small and quiet and forgettable. And yet something inside her felt different. Not stronger, not yet, but awake. A spark where there had only been ashes.
Bellatrix hummed. 'You felt it. Do not pretend you did not.'
“I do not know what I felt.”
'You will. Soon.'
Brittany leaned back against the wall, pulling her knees to her chest. The basement was silent except for the faint hum of the old heater and the distant sounds of the pack moving above her. She imagined Bianca laughing with her friends, Drew bragging about rejecting her, Vivienne pretending Brittany did not exist.
A familiar ache tightened her chest, but this time it did not swallow her whole. The moonlight had left something behind. A thread of warmth. A whisper of possibility.
She closed her eyes and let herself imagine, just for a moment, a different life. One where she was not the basement rat. One where she was not the pack’s joke. One where she was not the girl everyone expected to fail.
One where she mattered.
The thought felt dangerous. Reckless. But it also felt right.
Bellatrix whispered, 'You are not meant to live in the shadows forever.'
“I do not see how anything could change.”
'Because you are thinking like the girl they taught you to be,' Bellatrix murmured. 'Not the girl you are becoming.'
Brittany opened her eyes. The moon had shifted in the sky, its light now a thin sliver across the floor. But even that small sliver felt like a promise.
Somewhere in the distance, a wolf howled, long and low. The sound echoed through the trees, through the pack grounds, through her bones. Brittany wrapped her arms around herself, unsure why the howl made her chest ache.
The moonlight brightened without warning, a sudden swell of warmth that rolled through Brittany’s chest. She inhaled sharply, her hand flying to her heart as a strange rhythm pressed against her palm. It was steady, powerful, nothing like her own frantic pulse.
Bellatrix went still. 'There it is. The first sign.'
Brittany’s breath trembled. “What sign?”
'The moment your path shifts,' Bellatrix murmured. 'The moment someone notices.'
A cool draft swept across the basement, brushing her cheek like a fingertip. Brittany turned toward the window. The moon hung low and full, but something else moved behind its glow. A shape. A presence. Watching her with a focus that made her skin prickle.
Her throat tightened. “Who is that?”
Bellatrix’s voice dropped to a whisper. 'The Moon King is waking. And he has felt you.'
Brittany’s knees weakened. She backed away from the window, her heart pounding against the strange rhythm beneath it. The warmth in her chest pulsed again, answering something she could not see.
“I do not want this,” she whispered.
'Want has nothing to do with it,' Bellatrix said. 'The moon has chosen. And he will follow its call.'
Brittany sank onto the cot, her hands trembling. The basement felt smaller than ever, the air too thin, the shadows too deep. She pulled the blanket around her shoulders, but it did nothing to steady her.
Above her, the pack laughed and lived and breathed without her. Below the surface of her skin, something ancient stirred.
She closed her eyes, trying to calm her racing thoughts, but the warmth in her chest lingered, slow and deliberate, as if marking her from the inside.
The pack could whisper. They could shove her aside. They could pretend she did not exist.
But tonight, something powerful had reached across the darkness and touched her.
And whatever it was… it had no intention of letting her slip away.
