Chapter 21: The Awakening’s Aftermath

1675 Words
Brittany woke slowly, rising through layers of warmth and shadow. For a moment, she did not know where she was. The ceiling above her was unfamiliar. The air felt heavy with silence. Her body felt drained, as if every muscle had been wrung out and left trembling. Then she felt it. A presence. It was steady... warm... watching. She turned her head and found Drew leaning against the wall near the couch. His elbows rested on his knees. His eyes were half closed, but the moment she shifted, his wolf surged awake. Gold flickered through his gaze like a warning. “You are awake,” he said quietly. His voice was rough, as if he had not slept at all. Brittany pushed herself upright, her limbs unsteady. The room tilted before settling. “How long was I out?” she whispered. “Only a few hours. You needed it.” She did not argue. Her body still felt fragile, as if the third stirring had shaken something loose inside her. She pressed a hand to her chest, feeling the faint warmth beneath her ribs. It pulsed gently, alive and unsettling. The door opened, and Alpha Rowan stepped inside. Corvin and Thane followed, their expressions tight with concern. Brittany felt their eyes on her and looked down quickly. “Brittany,” Alpha Rowan said gently, “the pack felt the energy spike. They know something happened.” Her stomach tightened. “What do they think happened?” Beta Corvin answered. “They felt a shift. They felt you.” Gamma Thane added quietly, “They felt the Moon King.” Brittany’s breath caught. “I did not mean to call him.” Alpha Rowan shook his head. “Intent does not matter. Divine energy responds to awakening. You saw him because your Luna energy reached him.” She swallowed hard. “I do not want him to come here.” Drew stood and moved closer. “He will not touch you.” His presence settled around her like a shield. She did not understand why it helped, but it did. Bellatrix’s voice curled through her thoughts, soft and steady. 'The pack divides. The truth rises. And now they look without illusion.' Brittany’s pulse quickened. “What does that mean?” Alpha Rowan hesitated. “It means the pack will see you differently now. Some will be afraid. Some will be curious. Others will be loyal. And a few will not handle it well.” Bianca’s broken howl echoed faintly in Brittany’s memory. She shivered. Drew’s wolf growled. “She will not touch her.” Alpha Rowan nodded. “We will manage Bianca. But Brittany, today will be difficult.” Brittany pressed her hand to her chest again, grounding herself against the faint thrum beneath her ribs. She felt exposed, as if the world had peeled back a layer she had never meant to reveal. No masks. No pretending. Every stare she met would carry meaning now. Sharp. Assessing. Unfiltered. They would see her wolf eyes. And she was not sure whether that terrified her or steadied her. Alpha Rowan unlocked the office door. “You should eat something.” Brittany hesitated. The idea of stepping into the hallway made her stomach twist. She imagined wolves staring at her, whispering, judging. She imagined Bianca’s glare. She imagined Drew’s wolf reacting to every threat. Her pulse quickened. “You do not have to go out there yet,” Drew said. Alpha Rowan shook his head. “She does. The pack needs to see her.” Brittany swallowed hard. “I do not want to be the reason anyone panics.” “You are not,” Alpha Rowan said. “They are reacting to what they felt.” She stood slowly, her legs still unsteady. Drew moved to her side without hesitation. Bellatrix whispered, 'Walk, little one. The world must see you.' Brittany stepped into the hallway. The air felt charged. Wolves moved through the corridor, but their movements shifted the moment they noticed her. Conversations softened. Footsteps slowed. Eyes lingered. No one approached, nor dared. But they watched. A young omega carrying towels froze when she passed. His eyes widened, not with fear, but with awe. He lowered his gaze respectfully and hurried away. “Why did he do that?” she whispered. “Instinct,” Alpha Rowan said. “Luna energy affects wolves differently.” Drew’s wolf pushed forward. “Some feel threatened.” Brittany knew exactly who he meant. Bianca. They reached the dining hall. The room was full, but the moment Brittany stepped inside, the atmosphere shifted. Conversations faltered. Heads turned. A swell of silence rushed through the room. Brittany felt her breath stop. She wanted to shrink. She wanted to disappear. Drew stepped closer. “You are safe.” Alpha Rowan nodded. “Walk with confidence.” Brittany forced herself forward. Her hands trembled slightly, but she kept her chin lifted. She moved toward the food line, aware of every stare following her. A warrior stood abruptly. His chair scraped loudly. He lowered his head in a gesture she had only ever seen directed at Alpha Rowan. Respect... Submission.... Recognition. “Why did he do that?” she whispered. Gamma Thane answered softly. “He felt your energy.” Another wolf stood. Then another. A few bowed their heads. Others watched her with caution. “I do not want them to bow,” Brittany whispered in a panic, while she looked down at her feet. “They are bowing to what they felt,” Alpha Rowan said gently. She reached for a tray, her fingers trembling. Drew handed her one instead. His eyes scanned the room for danger. She moved down the line, grabbing food she barely tasted. Her wolf stirred faintly, responding to the attention. Bellatrix whispered, 'They see the Luna rising.' Brittany wanted to deny it, but the room told a different story. She turned to find a seat. Wolves shifted awkwardly, unsure whether to offer her a place. Her cheeks warmed. “She will sit with me,” Drew said. Brittany followed him to a small table near the window. Alpha Rowan, Beta Corvin, and Gamma Thane joined them. “I do not belong here,” she whispered. “You belong more than any of them,” Drew said. She looked up, startled. “Why would you say that?” “Because it is true.” Alpha Rowan leaned forward. “The pack is reacting to divine energy. They are not afraid of you. They are afraid of what this means.” Beta Corvin nodded. “They felt something powerful.” Gamma Thane added, “And some are afraid of Bianca.” “She hates me,” Brittany whispered. “She hates the truth,” Alpha Rowan stated firmly. Brittany looked around the room again. Wolves whispered, glancing her way. Some looked curious. Some looked cautious. Some looked reverent. No masks. No signs of pretending. They saw her. She tried to eat, but every bite felt heavy. Her stomach spun with nerves. Drew watched her closely. “You need to eat,” he said softly. “I am trying.” Alpha Rowan nodded. “Just enough to keep your strength.” She forced herself to take a few bites. A group of warriors entered. Their voices dropped when they saw her. Their eyes lingered with caution and curiosity. “I do not like this,” she whispered. “It will settle,” Alpha Rowan said. Bellatrix whispered, “They see the Luna rising.” Brittany’s body started to shake. A sudden movement near the entrance caught her attention. A young female wolf stepped inside, her eyes red from crying. Her hair was tangled. Her clothes were wrinkled. It was Bianca. The dining hall fell silent. Bianca’s gaze swept the room until it landed on Brittany. Her expression twisted, grief and rage mixing into something sharp and treacherous. Brittany’s heart dropped. Drew tensed beside her. Bianca stepped forward. “Bianca. Stop,” Alpha Rowan said. “She did this,” Bianca whispered-yelled. “I did not do anything,” Brittany said, meeting Bianca's venomous stare. “You took everything from me.” Bianca ground out every word through clenched teeth. Drew growled lowly. “She did nothing to you.” “You rejected me because of her,” Bianca cried. “I rejected you because you were never meant to be mine,” Drew said. Bianca flinched. “You were my mate.” “No. You were a bond forced by circumstance.” Drew's spoke confidently. Bianca’s face crumpled. “You chose her.” “My wolf chose her long before you tried to claim me.” Whispers erupted around the room. “She is nothing,” Bianca cried out. “She is a basement rat. She will never be a Luna!” “Enough,” Alpha Rowan said as he stood up from his chair. Bianca shook violently. Her wolf surged, unstable and dangerous. “I will make her pay.” Rowan’s Alpha command hit the room like a wave. Bianca gasped, collapsing under its weight. “You will leave,” Alpha Rowan said. Bianca trembled, tears spilling down her cheeks. She looked at Brittany one last time, grief and hatred twisting her expression, then fled the room. Silence followed. Brittany shook. Drew turned to her. “You are safe.” She nodded, though she did not feel safe. She felt exposed and overwhelmed. “This is only the beginning,” Alpha Rowan said. “You will learn to control your energy.” “I do not know how.” Bellatrix whispered, 'You will. In time.' Brittany looked at Drew. “Why does this feel so heavy?” “Because you are carrying more than you ever have,” he said. “But you are not carrying it alone.” Brittany exhaled shakily. Wolves watched her with new eyes. There are no masks or pretending. The pack saw her. And she did not know whether that terrified her or steadied her.
