The warning she ignored

824 Words
Staying in her room was impossible. She tried. For nearly an hour, she paced between the window and the bed, replaying every strange conversation she had had since arriving at the mansion. Stay inside today. You're not safe in my world. Everyone will be watching you. The more she thought about those words, the more frustrated she became. He kept warning her about things he refused to explain. How was she supposed to understand anything when every answer came wrapped in another mystery? With a sigh, she grabbed her phone and left the room. The mansion seemed unusually quiet. Most of the staff moved quickly through the hallways, avoiding unnecessary conversation. Even they seemed tense. As she walked toward the garden, she noticed a black luxury car parked near the entrance. Then another. And another. Visitors. Important ones. The garden was beautiful. For the first time since arriving, she felt like she could breathe. The scent of flowers drifted through the air as she sat on a stone bench beneath a large tree. Peace. At least for a moment. "Well, you certainly don't look dangerous." The unfamiliar voice made her jump. She turned sharply. A woman stood a few feet away. Elegant. Beautiful. And dressed in a way that screamed wealth. The woman smiled. But something about it felt wrong. Too perfect. Too practiced. "Sorry," the woman said lightly. "I didn't mean to scare you." She stood slowly. "It's fine." The woman's eyes moved over her carefully. Studying. Measuring. Almost like she was comparing her to something. Or someone. "So you're the wife." There it was again. That look. That tone. Everyone seemed surprised by her existence. "Yes," she answered carefully. The woman's smile widened. "Interesting." Before she could ask what that meant, the woman stepped closer. "I've known him for years." Her chest tightened slightly. Years? The woman continued. "I have to admit, I expected someone... different." The insult was subtle. But not subtle enough. She forced a polite smile. "I'm sorry to disappoint you." For the first time, genuine surprise flickered across the woman's face. Then amusement. "I see." The conversation should have ended there. But it didn't. The woman looked toward the mansion briefly before lowering her voice. "Did he tell you why he married you?" Her stomach tightened. "No." "Of course he didn't." The woman laughed softly. And somehow that felt worse. "What do you mean?" she asked. The woman's expression became thoughtful. Almost sympathetic. "Nothing." A lie. An obvious one. Before she could press further, another voice interrupted. Cold. Sharp. Dangerous. "That's enough." Her breath caught. He stood several feet away. His expression unreadable. But his eyes His eyes were fixed entirely on the woman. And for the first time since meeting him... She sensed anger. The woman sighed dramatically. "I was only talking." "You were leaving." Not please leave. Not I think you should go. Just certainty. Finality. The woman looked between them. Then smiled knowingly. "You're protecting her." The atmosphere changed instantly. The silence that followed felt suffocating. His expression hardened. "Leave." The woman held his gaze for another second. Then finally turned away. But not before saying one last thing. "Be careful." Her eyes landed on her. "You're in deeper than you think." And then she was gone. For several moments, neither of them spoke. The garden suddenly felt colder. Smaller. Less safe. "What was that about?" she finally asked. His jaw tightened. "Nothing." She stared at him in disbelief. "That was obviously not nothing." He looked away briefly. As if deciding how much to tell her. Or whether to tell her anything at all. "Stay away from her." That was all he said. Her frustration immediately returned. "That's not an explanation." "No." "It isn't." "Then explain." His gaze met hers. And something about it made her heart skip unexpectedly. Not because it was romantic. Because it was intense. Focused. Like he was seeing problems she couldn't yet see. "I told you to stay inside today." She crossed her arms. "And I told you that you never explain anything." For a second A very brief second She thought she saw amusement flicker across his face. Then it disappeared. Gone so quickly she wasn't even sure it had happened. "Come with me." She blinked. "What?" "I said, come with me." Without another word, he turned and began walking back toward the mansion. Leaving her with two choices. Follow him. Or remain in a garden that suddenly felt full of invisible dangers. She followed. But one question refused to leave her mind. Who was that woman? And why had he looked genuinely angry when she started asking questions? As they entered the mansion, she missed the way his expression darkened. Missed the message arriving on his phone. Missed the single line displayed on the screen. > She has already been noticed. And for the first time since the contract began... He realized events were moving faster than planned.
