Behind the public smile

760 Words
The moment the car door closed, silence returned. But it wasn’t the same silence as before. This one felt heavier. More aware. She could still feel the weight of every stare from the dinner. Every whisper. Every assumption. And most of all… The way he had called her his wife without hesitation. She stared out the window, arms folded tightly. “You didn’t tell me they would react like that,” she said quietly. No anger. Just confusion. He didn’t look at her. “They reacted normally.” She frowned slightly. “Normal?” “Yes.” That single word made her turn toward him. “If that was normal, then your world is not normal.” For a moment, he didn’t respond. Then, “It is,” he said calmly. “You are simply not used to it.” That answer made her chest tighten. Because it wasn’t wrong. But it also didn’t explain anything. The car pulled into the estate. The gates opened again like they belonged to him more than the land itself. She stepped out slowly, expecting relief. But instead, she felt something else. Awareness. Because this place no longer felt like just a contract space. It felt like part of a larger life she hadn’t agreed to understand. Inside, she finally broke. “You used me tonight,” she said. Her voice was sharper this time. He stopped walking. Slowly turned. “Explain.” Her hands clenched. “You called me your wife in front of all those people. That wasn’t part of the agreement.” A pause. He studied her for a moment. Then said calmly: “It was necessary.” Her brows tightened. “Necessary for what?” Silence. That was the problem. He never gave full answers. Only pieces. She stepped forward slightly. “I don’t understand you,” she admitted. “One moment I’m a stranger in a contract… the next I’m being displayed in your world like I belong there.” His eyes darkened slightly at her words. Displayed. That wasn’t the word he liked. But he didn’t correct her. Instead, he said something quieter. “You were always going to be seen.” That made her freeze. “What does that mean?” But he had already turned away. Ending the conversation before it could fully begin. As if he had said enough. Or too much. Later that night, she couldn’t sleep again. But this time, it wasn’t fear. It was thoughts. Too many of them. About him. About his world. About the way he looked at her in silence more than in words. And about something she didn’t want to admit yet, She was starting to notice him more than she should. A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. She hesitated. “Who is it?” Silence. Then his voice. “Open the door.” Her heart skipped slightly. Why was he here? At this time? She opened the door slowly. He stood there. Still in his dark suit from earlier. But this time… something about him looked different. Not softer. Not warmer. Just… more present. Like he wasn’t wearing the mask he wore in public anymore. “You didn’t sleep,” he said. It wasn’t a question. She frowned slightly. “Neither did you.” A pause. Then, “I was thinking,” he replied. That surprised her. He didn’t seem like the type who thought about anything unnecessarily. She crossed her arms. “About what?” His gaze held hers for a second longer than usual. Then he said: “About how long it will take before they start watching you closely.” Her stomach tightened. “Who?” But he didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he added something lower. “Everyone.” Silence filled the space between them. She suddenly became aware of how close he was standing. Too close for comfort. Too close for a contract. And yet… she didn’t step back. “You’re not safe in my world,” he said finally. That should have scared her. But instead, it confused her more. “Then why bring me into it?” she asked quietly. A pause. A longer one this time. And for the first time since she met him, His answer wasn’t immediate. “I didn’t have a choice,” he said. And then he left. Just like that. Leaving her standing in a doorway filled with questions she didn’t know how to ask yet. And for the first time… She started wondering if the contract she signed was really about money at all.
