She didn’t move after he left.
The words he said kept echoing in her mind like something she couldn’t turn off.
“You’re not safe in my world.”
“Everyone will watch you.”
“I didn’t have a choice.”
Each sentence felt like a piece of a puzzle she didn’t have the full picture for.
And that was what scared her most.
Not him.
Not the contract.
But how little she actually understood about what she had stepped into.
Morning came with no peace.
She barely slept, and her thoughts felt heavier than her body as she walked down the hallway.
The mansion was still quiet.
Too quiet.
Until she heard voices.
Near the entrance, two staff members were speaking in low tones.
“I’m telling you, she appeared too suddenly.”
“But he brought her personally…”
“That’s the first time in years anyone has been brought in like that.”
She stopped walking.
Not intentionally.
But her body reacted before her mind could.
They were talking about her.
“I heard she’s the contract wife,” one of them said.
The word contract hit differently when said by strangers.
Like she wasn’t a person.
Just a transaction.
She stepped back quietly before they noticed her.
Her chest felt tight.
So this was how it was going to be.
Even here, she wasn’t truly seen.
Only evaluated.
“Listening to staff conversations is not recommended.”
A voice came from behind her.
She turned quickly.
He was standing there.
Calm. Composed. As unreadable as ever.
She frowned slightly. “They were talking about me.”
“I know.”
“And you’re not going to say anything?”
A pause.
Then,
“They are not wrong to be curious.”
That answer made her irritation rise slightly.
“So I’m just something to be discussed now?”
His gaze sharpened just a little.
“No.”
A beat.
“You are something to be observed.”
That sentence made her uncomfortable.
“Observed by who?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
And that silence again… told her more than words did.
Before she could press further, a maid rushed in.
“Sir, there is an issue with the east wing arrangements.”
He didn’t look away from her when he responded.
“Handle it.”
“Yes, sir.”
Then silence returned between them again.
She exhaled slowly. “You always talk like people are problems to manage.”
His eyes shifted slightly.
“People are predictable.”
“And I’m not?” she asked immediately.
That made him pause.
Just for a second.
Then,
“You are not supposed to be here,” he said.
The words were calm.
But heavy.
Her breath caught slightly.
“That’s the second time you’ve said something like that.”
He didn’t deny it.
Instead, he looked at her properly.
Not like a contract.
Not like an arrangement.
But like something that complicated a plan.
“You should stay in your room today,” he said finally.
She frowned. “Why?”
“Because today is not safe for you to be seen.”
Her stomach tightened again.
“That doesn’t answer anything.”
“I know.”
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then she asked quietly:
“Why do I feel like I signed something I don’t understand?”
That question lingered in the air longer than expected.
He didn’t respond immediately.
For once… he looked like he was choosing his words carefully.
“You needed help,” he said finally.
“That’s why I helped.”
Her voice lowered. “At what cost?”
A pause.
Long.
Then,
“More than you know.”
Before she could react, he turned slightly as his phone rang.
He answered without hesitation.
“Speak.”
A deep voice came through.
Her eyes stayed on him.
And for the first time…
She saw something change in his expression.
Not emotion.
Not softness.
Something colder.
More dangerous.
He ended the call.
Silence returned instantly.
She noticed it immediately.
Something had shifted.
“Is everything okay?” she asked before she could stop herself.
He looked at her for a long moment.
Then said:
“Stay inside today.”
This time… it wasn’t a suggestion.
She opened her mouth to protest,
But he had already walked away.
Leaving her standing there again.
With the same feeling from before.
That she was inside a world she didn’t understand…
And the deeper she went into it…
The harder it would become to leave.
