Chapter 10

1539 Words
The first day Ella walked into the antenatal clinic, she felt like the whole world could see through her. The hospital walls were painted in soft cream and pale blue, colors meant to calm anxious mothers, but nothing about her heart felt calm. The smell of antiseptic hung in the air, and the low hum of nurses calling out names made everything feel too real. She was no longer just a girl who made a mistake. She was a mother-to-be. She placed her hand gently on her growing stomach as she sat among other women. Some were married, wearing wedding rings that glittered when they adjusted their scarves. Some came with their husbands, who carried bags and held hands proudly. Ella sat quietly, alone. But not truly alone. Her mind drifted back to the day Daniel had stepped in. If Daniel had not interfered when everything fell apart, what would her life have become? She remembered Josh’s cold eyes when he heard she was pregnant. She remembered the way he disappeared, the silence that followed, the shame that swallowed her whole. If Daniel had not stood firm beside Anita… if he had not paid her hospital bills… if he had not spoken calmly when Anita was drowning in disappointment and fear… Ella knew she might have broken beyond repair. She swallowed hard. Her life would have been miserable. But somehow, in the middle of her chaos, Daniel had become her shelter. Daniel had never planned to fall in love. Not like this. He had only wanted to help. When he first met Anita and Ella, they were two struggling sisters trying to survive a world that had not been kind to them. He admired Anita’s strength, how she carried responsibility like it was stitched into her skin. He admired Ella’s gentleness, the quiet softness in her voice whenever she spoke. Ella was different. She was fragile, but not weak. She was tender, but not foolish. Even after betrayal, even after heartbreak, she still carried kindness in her eyes. Daniel saw something precious in her — something rare. And that was how it started. Small gifts. A new maternity dress because he “passed by the store and thought it would fit.” Fruits delivered to the house because “pregnant women need vitamins.” A comfortable chair placed in the sitting room because “she shouldn’t stand too much.” He told himself it was just care. But deep inside, he knew he was trying to get her attention. Trying to make her see him. Trying to replace the ghost of Josh. Ella, however, never suspected it. To her, Daniel was simply kind. A good man. A brother-figure. A blessing sent by God during her darkest hour. She never noticed how his voice softened when he called her name. She never saw the way his eyes lingered on her when she laughed. She never realized that every time she thanked him, his heart beat faster. He loved her quietly. And quietly, Anita was falling too. Anita would sometimes sit alone at night, staring at the ceiling, wondering how a stranger had walked into their lives and slowly become family. How? She remembered the first day Daniel offered help. She had been suspicious. In a world where kindness always had hidden motives, how could someone give so freely? But Daniel never asked for anything in return. He didn’t take advantage of their vulnerability. He didn’t speak down on them. Instead, he stood beside them. When Ella’s pregnancy became the talk of the neighborhood, Daniel silenced the whispers by showing up daily. When bills stacked up, he handled them. When Anita cried in secret, thinking she had failed as an elder sister, Daniel reassured her that she had done her best. “You didn’t fail her,” he once told Anita gently. “Life just happened.” Those words had stayed with her. Anita found herself smiling whenever Daniel visited. She noticed the way he respected her opinions. The way he asked for her advice. The way he listened — truly listened — when she spoke. How could a stranger turn into family? Sometimes she feared it. Because deep inside, something in her heart was shifting. She just didn’t know that Daniel’s care and affection would one day change her life in ways she never imagined. One evening, Daniel called Anita aside. Ella was resting in her room after a tiring antenatal session. The house was quiet except for the ticking of the wall clock. “I’ve been thinking,” Daniel began. Anita folded her arms. “About what?” “About you.” She raised an eyebrow. “Me?” “Yes. You stopped school because of responsibilities. That shouldn’t be your ending.” Anita looked away. That part of her life was painful. She had given up her dreams to raise Ella after their parents passed. Going back to school felt impossible. Daniel continued, “I’ve arranged a scholarship for you. Full coverage. Tuition, books… everything.” Anita froze. “What?” “I want you to go back to school,” he said calmly. “You deserve it.” Tears filled her eyes before she could stop them. “Daniel… I don’t even know what to say.” “Say yes.” She laughed through her tears. “Yes.” He smiled, relieved. “And Ella?” Anita asked softly. Daniel nodded. “After she puts to bed and recovers well, I have plans for her too. She’ll go back to school. She’s too smart to waste her future.” Anita covered her mouth, overwhelmed. For the first time in years, hope didn’t feel like a dangerous thing to hold. She was happy. Truly happy. But happiness doesn’t erase memories. Some nights, when the house was silent and her hand rested on her stomach, Ella still missed Josh. She hated herself for it. How could she miss someone who abandoned her? But love — or what she thought was love — does not disappear overnight. She remembered the sweet words he once told her. The promises. The laughter. The dreams they shared. Her heart and her pride were at war. One afternoon, unable to keep the thoughts bottled inside, she picked up her phone and called Mamacita. Mamacita had always been the loud, fearless friend. The type that said the truth even when it hurt. “Hello?” Mamacita’s voice boomed through the phone. “Mama…” Ella began softly. “Why do you sound like someone who is about to annoy me?” Ella hesitated. “I think I still miss Josh.” There was silence. Then— “Are you mad?” Mamacita exploded. “Leave your useless Ruth era!” Ella blinked. “My what?” “Your dramatic loyalty era!” Mamacita snapped. “Who still misses a guy that betrayed and abandoned her? Are you out of your mind? What type of love is this?” Ella felt her cheeks burn even though Mamacita couldn’t see her. “I just… I don’t know. Sometimes I remember how he used to be.” “He used to be a liar!” Mamacita cut in. “A man showed you his true colors and you’re still painting him gold?” Ella sighed. “Listen to me,” Mamacita continued firmly. “You are pregnant. That boy ran. He didn’t even look back. Meanwhile, someone else is taking care of you, paying bills, showing up. And you’re crying over who?” Ella went quiet. Mamacita softened slightly. “You deserve better. Stop romanticizing pain.” Tears slid down Ella’s face. “I’m coming with you to your antenatal session today,” Mamacita suddenly declared. “What? Why?” “Because I don’t trust you. You could do something funny — like go and call Josh again or start crying in public. I’m not taking chances.” Despite everything, Ella laughed. “You’re impossible.” “And you’re stubborn,” Mamacita replied. “Be ready in thirty minutes.” When the call ended, Ella sat still for a long moment. Maybe Mamacita was right. Maybe she had been holding onto a memory instead of reality. She wiped her tears and stood up slowly. Outside her room, Anita and Daniel were talking quietly. When Ella stepped out, Daniel immediately stood. “Are you okay?” he asked. “Yes,” she said gently. And in that moment, she noticed something she had never paid attention to before. The way he looked at her. Not with pity. Not with obligation. But with something deeper. Something warm. She didn’t understand it yet. But for the first time, she wondered. Maybe her life wasn’t ruined. Maybe it was just beginning in a way she never expected. And somewhere in the background, unseen and unspoken, hearts were shifting. Daniel loved quietly. Anita hoped silently. Ella healed slowly. And the baby growing inside her was not just a reminder of betrayal — but a symbol that even broken stories can find new beginnings. Little did they know, the plans Daniel had for their future would soon test their emotions, their loyalty, and their hearts. Because sometimes, the person who saves you… changes everything.
