CHAPTER FOUR
“I am not feeling the colour, what do you think?” Zara asked me.
We at the mall, that Zara dragged me too. She insisted I get new clothes for my new job. I can’t even argue with her. I really needed new clothes.
Yes.
I am finally employed. I found out that I got the job after the dinner, and I was so happy. Finally, I have a job. Having a job made me happier than the job being in COLOR ME.
Having a job had been my biggest dream. I hated being dependent, having to depend on someone. It made me feel limited and unsatisfied. I felt guilty even asking money from my mum, so getting a job, having a money in my name, no matter the amount made me happy and the fact that I have to work in my dream company made me happier. I wasn’t someone that has a dream, and it goes through, so this was really huge for me.
“Hello.”Zara waved her hand in my face.
“Yeah.”
“The colour?”
I totally zoned out.
“Oh, yes I like it.”
“No. We are not looking for like, we are looking for love. L-O-V-E.” she stressed the last word.
I smiled at her as she kept stressing. Zara has been a solid rock for me, she always stood firm by my side and refused to let me sleep alone.
“We’ll take this.” she told the attendant.
She brought out her card.
“Nope. I can pay for this.” I brought out mine.
“I want to pay for this. Just think of it as an early present.” she stopped me from dropping my card and puts hers on the table.
We left the boutique and went for lunch.
“Your last weekend unemployed, what do you want to do?”
“take a breather, I guess.” I said looking at the view of people running, taking their dogs for a walk, having cute dates, the chitchats, the breeze.
“Yeah. I feel you girl, the corporate world is no joke.” she said and sipped her juice.
I opened my phone and called my mum.
“Hi mum.”
“Maya, how are you?”
“good. How are you?”
“I am doing well, the renovations are making me really busy but your brother is coming back next week so I will take some time off it.”
My mum, ever since we left, has been focused on re-decorating the house. It is her therapy.
“Mum. I called to tell you that I got the job.”
“at COLOR ME?”
“Yes.” I laughed.
“oh my baby. I am so proud of you. I knew you would get it. Yayy.” she cheered.
I smiled at her reaction but my anxiety kicked in.
‘They may regret their decision.’
‘you may end up being the worst staff they have.’
‘you will leave a terrible dent in the company’s image.’
“Maya.”
“Hello.”
I zoned out. Again.
“Mum. Sorry, I was distracted.”
“are you okay,dear?”
“Yeah. I am fine. I am having lunch with Zara.”
“Okay, you should come home soon.”
“I will ma, when I have the time.”
“Hmm, this time that you never have.”
I laughed at her comment.
“Okay, have to go, the plumber just came in.” she cut the call.
“What did she say?” Maya asked.
“she just said she was happy and told me to come home.”
“We should. I miss home cooked food.”
I nodded.
“We need to go running everyday, I feel stiff.” I said as I saw people running in the park.
“We definitely should but I don’t have much time on my hands and you won’t too.”
“Yeah, but during the weekends would be fine.”
”Yeah it would.”
I nodded in agreement.
“-but I am spending it with Oscar.” she smiled.
Oscar is Zara’s on and off boyfriend ever since we were in college. He was there, then he was not, but I guess he is here again.
“Oscar?” I asked folding my hands.
“Yeah, we are going to this resort this weekend.”
”Mhmm, spontaneous.” I squinted my eyes at her.
“it is.” she sipped her juice avoiding eye contact with me.
“Girl, know what are you doing. Oscar doesn’t want a serious relationship.” I confronted her.
“So. I never said I wanted one too.”
I sighed. This is going to bite back at Zara and I don’t want that to happen again.
I kept my mouth shut and silently prayed that she knows what she is doing.
“Maya. Let’s watch some Netflix.” Zara said.
I smiled and nodded.
I hopped on the couch in the living room.
“We haven’t finished GIRLFRIENDS.” she said as she scrolled on Netflix.
“speak for yourself.”
“WHAT?” she screamed.
“You were busy, I was bored.” I shrugged.
“You betrayer.” she commented and I blew a kiss at her.
“I don’t care we are watching it.”
There is no going back and forth with her so I just let her.
We ordered some chicken and Jollof rice.
We watched and I kept spoiling it for her to get on her nerve.
“Zara, pass the remote.” I said as the episode ended.
No answer.
I turned back to see a knocked out Zara.
I stood up and helped her to her bed.
”I am happy for you.” she murmured as she snuggled her duvet.
I smiled and kissed her forehead.
“Goodnight Zara.”
