What with everything else going on, I’d pretty much forgotten about seeing Bruce McDermott furtively going into Guy Mannington’s office. Given Guy’s propensity for f*****g just about anybody who took his fancy, I was instantly suspicious those two were getting it on. That, of course, was none of my business, or wouldn’t have been if Bruce hadn’t been regularly dating Rae, whom I’d come to love like the sister I’d never had. I felt guilty enough for making Rae think I was sexually interested in her the previous fall, when I really just enjoyed her company. I hated to think someone else was setting her up for a disappointment. She deserved better than that, and she was so beautiful she should have been shooing away potential lovers.
