Chapter 9 – The Eclipse Ritual Word Count: 10,342 --- June 26th – 11:59 PM The moon slid into perfect alignment over Elbridge. But no one was outside. Because everyone who could feel the shift in the air—the vibration in their bones, the press of an unseen force against the skin—had already gone underground, into bunkers, basements, or churches. Adira wasn’t so lucky. She stood barefoot in the clearing, cold wind slicing across her skin like knives. The altar pulsed beneath her palm. She could hear every whisper now—thousands of voices chanting in her skull, echoing from another dimension. Behind her, the others watched from the tree line. Cass lit a circle of black candles. Nova poured salt in the shape of an eye. Theo carried the Book of Flesh, its cover twitching as if alive. “Are you sure you want to do this?” Theo asked, voice shaking. “No,” Adira said. “But I have to.” --- Elsewhere – The Hollow Begins to Crack At the edge of town, the abandoned mine split in half with a thunderous roar. Screams—inhuman and overlapping—poured from the chasm. Sheriff Maddox arrived too late. The crackling in his walkie screamed his name over and over until it caught fire. From the pit, shadows began to rise. Not smoke. Not fog. Bodies. Or what used to be. Twisted. Reformed. Smiling with too many teeth. The Hollow Crown’s children were awake. --- Back in the Clearing – The Ritual Begins Nova opened the Book. Cass began chanting from the pages. Theo dropped to his knees, drawing a sigil into the dirt. Adira stepped into the center of the circle. As soon as her foot crossed the salt, her body jerked like she'd touched live wire. Every nerve in her body screamed. She could see through time. She saw Nate—her brother—before he died. She saw him reaching for her through the Veil. She saw herself as a baby. Crying in a government facility, blood glowing gold. She saw the end of the world. Cass yelled, “Hold her!” Nova ran forward, grabbing Adira before she collapsed. The sky above turned black. Not just dark—void. Stars vanished. The eclipse hit totality. And in that moment, something stepped into the clearing. --- The Hollow Crown Appears The world warped. Branches curled inward like they feared what was coming. The air smelled of rot and ozone. Reality bled at the edges. And then he arrived. Not with a scream. Not with lightning. With a whisper. Every candle blew out. The Book slammed shut. Theo vomited. And standing across from Adira, where the altar cracked in half, was Him. Nine feet tall. Wrapped in shadows. A crown of bone and black flame atop a face with no features—only a gaping hole, bleeding stars. The Hollow Crown. Adira’s knees buckled. But she didn’t fall. Because he spoke—and his voice sounded like her mother. Her brother. Her own thoughts. “You belong to me.” --- Inside the Veil Suddenly, she was nowhere. Adira floated in an endless white void. A woman—tall, beautiful, ageless—stood before her. “You don’t have to fight him,” the woman said. “You could rule. You could erase pain. End fear. Be a goddess.” Adira blinked. “Who are you?” “I’m you. The part that could surrender.” And for a moment… she considered it. No more suffering. No more pain. No more death. But then she remembered Nate’s smile. She remembered Theo’s hug. Nova’s sarcasm. Cass’s weird obsession with Latin. And she said: “No. I’d rather burn.” --- The Real World – She Fights Back Her eyes snapped open. The Hollow Crown stepped forward. But this time, Adira reached out—and the sigils on her body blazed with golden fire. The salt circle ignited. The Book split down the middle, screaming as it burned. Cass collapsed, bleeding from her ears. Nova dragged her to safety. Theo reached for Adira but was yanked backward by one of the shadow creatures. Adira screamed, “NO!” A shockwave blasted outward. The trees cracked. The earth split. And then—light. Pure. Golden. Blinding. The Hollow Crown hissed. Its form began to unravel. And from within Adira… a second voice spoke. Older. Deeper. The Gatekeeper. “You may not pass,” it thundered. The Hollow Crown shrieked—his body stretched like plastic—then exploded into dust and wind. The sky returned. The stars flickered back on. And Adira collapsed. --- Three Hours Later – Aftermath Adira woke in a hospital bed. Nova sat beside her, one eye swollen, arm in a sling. “You okay?” “Define okay,” Adira rasped. Theo limped in with coffee. “You exploded a god. Pretty badass.” Cass followed, her face pale. “You burned your mortal blood. You’re… something else now.” Adira looked at her hands. The sigils were still there. Glowing faintly. “I’m still me,” she whispered. “I think.” Cass exchanged glances with Nova. “You’re not the only one.” --- A New Problem In the woods where the Hollow Crown died, the ground glowed. Something moved beneath the soil. Then a hand shot out—human, shaking, covered in veins of black. The Hollow Crown… wasn’t gone. Just sleeping. And something had crossed over before the gate closed. A girl. Eyes red as blood. Smiling like she knew what came next. --- To be continued...
