Chapter 8 – Eyes in the Dark

1339 Words
The rain had not stopped since midnight. Thin streams of water slid down the tall glass windows of the Sterling penthouse, turning the city lights into blurred streaks of gold and red. Inside the dim study, Ametrine Ambrose sat alone. A stack of medical records lay open before her. The faint glow of the desk lamp illuminated the careful lines of her face, her brows slightly drawn together as she examined brain scans displayed on the tablet. Zyair Sterling’s grandmother. Coma for three years. Multiple neurological complications. Three failed surgeries. And one final hope. Her fingers traced the scan slowly. Anyone else might have missed it. But not her. A tiny shadow near the hippocampus. Subtle. Hidden. Dangerous. Ametrine leaned back, closing her eyes. “So that’s it…” The whisper escaped her lips. She understood now why no surgeon had succeeded. They were looking in the wrong place. Her heartbeat quickened. If she performed the surgery… She could save the woman. But revealing that knowledge meant revealing herself. Her secret identity. The world-renowned surgeon who disappeared years ago. Ametrine Ambrose was supposed to be nothing more than a quiet office assistant. Not a medical prodigy. Not the ghost doctor many powerful families searched for. Not the woman the Orsini family feared. A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. The door opened. Zyair stepped inside. He had removed his suit jacket, the sleeves of his black shirt rolled to his elbows. His dark hair was slightly damp from the rain. He paused when he saw her surrounded by medical files. “You’re still awake.” His voice was low. Ametrine quickly straightened the papers. “I couldn’t sleep.” Zyair walked closer. His gaze shifted toward the medical scans. “You’ve been studying my grandmother’s records.” It wasn’t a question. Ametrine hesitated. Then nodded. “I thought… maybe I could understand her condition better.” Zyair studied her carefully. There was something about the way she looked at those records. Focused. Intense professional. “how is it?” he ask slowly. Ametrine lifted her eyes. A faint smile touched his lips. “You’re full of surprises, Ametrine.” She forced a soft laugh. If only he knew. Zyair leaned against the desk, crossing his arms. “Every specialist I hired said the same thing.” “What?” “That her condition is impossible.” The word hung in the air. Impossible. Ametrine’s chest tightened. Nothing in medicine was truly impossible. Just misunderstood. But she stayed silent. For now. Zyair watched her closely. “You look like you’re thinking of something.” Her heart skipped. “Just… wondering if they missed something.” The words slipped out before she could stop them. Zyair’s gaze sharpened. “Missed something?” Ametrine quickly looked away. “Just a thought.” But Zyair wasn’t convinced. He moved closer. Too close. His presence surrounded her. “You’re hiding something.” Her breath caught. “I’m not.” “Then look at me and say that.” Slowly, she lifted her eyes. Their gazes locked. The tension between them thickened. For a moment neither of them spoke. Rain tapped softly against the glass. Finally Zyair exhaled. “Forget it.” He stepped back. “You should rest.” Ametrine nodded. But before she could stand— Her phone vibrated. A message. Unknown number. Her stomach tightened as she opened it. Just two words. We see you. Her blood ran cold. Another message appeared. Dr. Ambrose. The phone slipped slightly in her hand. They knew. The Orsini family. Her eyes darted toward the window instinctively. Across the street, a black car sat parked beneath a flickering streetlight. Engine running. Watching. Zyair noticed the change in her expression. “What’s wrong?” “Nothing.” She quickly locked the phone. But her pulse was racing. They were closer than she thought. Closer than she ever allowed. Zyair walked toward the window. Following her line of sight. His gaze narrowed when he spotted the car. “That vehicle has been there all night.” Ametrine’s heart pounded. “You think it’s suspicious?” Zyair didn’t answer immediately. Instead he reached for his phone and sent a quick message. Within seconds, security lights around the building brightened. The car’s engine suddenly started. And then it drove away. Too quickly. Zyair turned back to her. “You’re not telling me everything.” Ametrine forced calm into her voice. “It’s probably nothing.” But Zyair stepped closer again. His eyes searched hers. “You’re scared.” Her lips parted. “I’m not.” “You are.” His voice softened. “Did someone threaten you?” The concern in his tone caught her off guard. Ametrine looked away. If she told him the truth… Everything would collapse. His family. Her identity. Their fragile connection. “I can handle it,” she whispered. Zyair frowned. “Handle what?” She realized her mistake too late. Silence filled the room again. Then Zyair gently took the medical files from her hands. “You’re exhausted.” He closed the folder. “You’ve been carrying too much alone.” Ametrine’s chest tightened. If only he knew how true that was. He placed the files aside. “Come with me.” “Where?” “Bed.” Her breath caught. Zyair’s gaze softened slightly. “You need sleep.” The simple words carried something deeper. Something warm. Something dangerous. Ametrine hesitated. But she was too tired to argue. He guided her toward the bedroom. The lights were dim. Rain continued falling outside. She sat on the edge of the bed. Zyair stood before her. For a moment neither of them moved. Then he gently brushed a strand of hair from her face. The touch was light. But electric. “Ametrine…” His voice lowered. “You don’t have to fight everything alone.” Her throat tightened. “You barely know me.” “I know enough.” His fingers lingered near her cheek. “And I want to know the rest.” Her heartbeat echoed in her ears. Being this close to him felt dangerous. Not because of desire. But because of truth. Yet when Zyair leaned down— She didn’t stop him. Their lips met softly. Tentative. Testing. Then the kiss deepened. Warm. Hungry. Months of tension releasing in a single moment. Ametrine’s hands instinctively gripped his shirt. Zyair pulled her closer. The rain outside seemed to fade. The world shrinking to just them. But somewhere in the city… Inside a dark office overlooking the skyline… Another pair of eyes watched. Surveillance screens flickered across the room. One screen showed the Sterling building. Another displayed security camera feeds. A man sat calmly in the chair. His expression cold. Marco Orsini. He tapped the screen displaying Ametrine’s face. “There you are.” A smirk curved his lips. “The missing doctor.” One of his men stepped forward. “Should we move now?” Marco shook his head. “No.” He leaned back slowly. “Let her feel safe first.” His eyes glinted. “Hope makes betrayal more painful.” The man nodded. “And the Sterling heir?” Marco’s smile widened. “Let him fall in love.” He stood and walked toward the window. Rain poured over the city lights below. “Because when the truth comes out…” His voice dropped to a whisper. “It will destroy him.” Back at the Sterling penthouse… Ametrine slowly pulled away from Zyair. Breathless. Her heart racing. Something about the moment felt fragile. Dangerous. Zyair rested his forehead against hers. “You’re shaking.” “Just tired.” He studied her expression. “Whatever is chasing you…” His voice hardened slightly. “I won’t let it touch you.” The promise made her chest ache. Because she knew something he didn’t. The danger wasn’t just chasing her. It was already here. Watching. Waiting. And when the Orsini family finally moved… Everything Zyair believed about his world— Would shatter.
