Chapter 00009

1170 Words
Phil's pov I stared at the amber liquid in my glass pensively, my thoughts occupied with Erica's words from the day before. What could she possibly want with my heir? Why was she interested in him and most importantly why did she want to teach him about the books of ancestry which she claimed existed, contrary to popular belief. "If you stare any harder I'm sure you'll break the damn glass Phil" Michael, the only true friend I had broke into my thoughts. "I have a lot on my mind" I murmured looking around the lowly lit bar that was slowly getting crowded. "Obviously" he looked at me pointedly and I sighed. "A lot is going on in my Pack right now and the grand Pack committee is on my neck" I revealed. "I thought you were already married to someone and gave them a Luna?" He inquired. "I did but they are not satisfied. Now they require a pup, an heir to carry on my bloodline" I explained and his eyes bulged. "It's barely been seven months since you got married, why the rush?" He questioned. "I don't know, it almost feels as though there is something they aren't telling me" I murmured as I furrowed my brows. I didn't actually know the rush for an heir, except the fact that they wanted to ensure my bloodline held the Alpha title. "Then simply satisfy them and give them what they want so that you can be free" Michael stated. "You're right, I wonder how I hadn't thought about that" I looked at him flatly and he flashed a grin at me. "This Alpha business is too tricky, that's why I love the life that I live with every ounce of breath within me" he leaned back in his chair and placed his hands behind his head with a sigh. As I gazed at his relaxed posture I couldn't help the stab of envy that shot through me, not for the first time. Michael was everything I was not, carefree and free from responsibility. He led a life he chose, a life of adventure and excitement while I was tied down to a chair behind my oak table, trying to find solutions for my Pack. "We all can't be normal wolves now, can we?" My lips stretched into a smile I knew didn't reach my eyes. "But seriously though, why haven't you gotten your Luna pregnant and more importantly why are you hiding away here instead of returning to your Pack because I know your business here is concluded" he quirked a brow at me. "First of all my business here is far from concluded, if anything I have more questions now than I did before I came here" I took a swing of my drink. "And secondly, I have tried relentlessly to get her pregnant. I can't even bear to look at her anymore because she reminds me of all my obligations to my Pack- which I have failed to meet" I ran a hand over my face. "So you blame her for being unable to conceive?" Michael questioned. "I don't know" I muttered but I knew deep within me I did. It showed in the way I scowled at her whenever she was in the same room as me and how I spoke to her regardless of who was there. I cringed as I knew I couldn't afford Luna the respect she deserved. "Why not just get a breeder and be done with the whole heir business?" Michael suggested, breaking into my thoughts. "Where would I get a breeder?" I scrunched my brows. "You are an Alpha, Phil. Women are vain and attracted to your power and would fall at your feet at the mere suggestion of carrying your heir" he explained and I pondered his words. "Wouldn't that be disrespectful to my Luna?" I asked out loud. "Alpha's do it all the time and if this woman sees bedding you as a chore the same way you do then I'm sure she would be relieved" he proclaimed and I saw the wisdom in his words. "If I am to choose a breeder she would have to possess certain qualities and I would need to be assured-" I began but Michael sent me a bewildered look. "You have to take the fun out of everything Phil. You don't need to meticulously fish out a breeder the way you would a warrior who possesses great strength and agility" he held onto the bridge of his nose as he shook his head at me. "But-" "But nothing Phil. Find a woman you are half attracted to and get it over and done with" he insisted and he was right. I realized this was probably the only chance I would get to be wild and reckless in my life. "There are many women here Phil, simply take your pick" he waved his hand around the bar. I scanned the room but none of the women stood out to me, they all looked bland and cliche with their eyes scanning the room as if they were trying to catch their next prey. Something I definitely did not need my breeder to be. "You can't possibly be that picky" Michael groaned from beside me and I could only guess my eyes shine the uninterest I felt staring at these women. "I have to go" I stood abruptly from my stool and made my way out of the bar, ignoring the hollering from Michael. I pondered Michael's words as I walked down the street, subconsciously assessing all the women that walked past me wondering if they would be a good fit for a breeder. A small frame crashed into me with a curse and my body instantly hummed alive as my hands instinctively went around her waist to steady her. The distant familiar scent of roses hit my nostrils and I jerked back in shock. 'No, it couldn't be' My heart beat loudly in my chest. And yet as I looked up my eyes collided with those blue orbs that once shattered the world around me. "Lucy?" I stared at my first mate in shock. "Phil? Is it you?" She dared to touch me and cup my cheeks in her hands. A part of me was excited and elevated at her touch but the darker side of me wanted to sneer at her for acting like we were long time distant friends. "Get your hands off me" I gritted out. Her hands slowly dropped and she took a step away from me, it was then that I really saw her. Her face glowed and she looked better than ever, I couldn't help but wonder if she was affected at all after rejecting me. Her eyes still shone with innocence, an innocence I was sure was mere pretense and a cover. "I have a proposition for you?" I looked down at her, wondering who better to bear my heir than the mate who rejected me.
