Sophie's POV:
The day after the wedding, I contacted a lawyer.
The divorce agreement hadn't been prepared in advance. By the time Chase asked, "If I didn't have a dad either," I already knew the wedding had to stop. Contacting the lawyer was a decision I made on my own, as a wife and a mother.
For those seven days, Chase and I stayed in a friend's empty apartment.
The first night, I crouched by his bed and apologized to him, seriously. I told him that Mom should never have let him wait with me, and should never have treated a wedding as proof that his father would change.
Chase asked, "When I called him uncle, were you sad?"
I said, "No. What you call him is your choice, not a way to punish anyone for me."
