Chapter 18: A Heart Divided

1036 Words
The morning light spilled into Emily’s apartment, illuminating the familiar space that had felt like home. But today, it felt different. The excitement that usually accompanied Tyler’s return was overshadowed by a gnawing feeling in her stomach. Since he had come back from his vacation, things had shifted in a way she hadn’t expected. As she prepared her morning coffee, Emily glanced at her phone, half-hoping for a message from Tyler. Instead, there was only silence. The absence of his texts made her heart feel heavy. She recalled the previous days when Tyler had been more interested in his phone than in her, leaving her feeling like an afterthought. When Tyler finally arrived at her apartment later that day, he was accompanied by Sarah. The moment she walked in, Emily felt a chill run down her spine. Sarah was stunning, with an effortless grace that drew attention. Emily forced a smile, attempting to mask her discomfort. “Hey, Em! I hope you don’t mind me tagging along. Tyler said you two were going to catch up,” Sarah said, her voice bright and cheerful. “Not at all,” Emily replied, though the words felt hollow. As they settled into the living room, Emily tried to engage in the conversation, but it was evident that Tyler’s focus was on Sarah. He laughed at her jokes, leaning in closer than necessary, his hand resting casually on her knee. Emily felt a pang of jealousy twist in her gut. After a few minutes of light banter, Tyler turned to Emily, his expression shifting slightly. “So, how have you been, Em?” he asked, but the question felt rehearsed, lacking genuine interest. “Just the usual,” she replied, forcing a smile. “School’s busy, you know?” “Right,” he nodded, his attention drifting back to Sarah, who was sharing stories about their vacation. Emily watched as Tyler’s face lit up with every word Sarah spoke, and it stung. The distance between them felt palpable, as if an invisible wall had risen since his return. As they talked, Emily caught glimpses of Tyler’s phone buzzing with notifications. Each time, her heart sank a little lower. It was a stark reminder that his attention was divided, and it didn’t sit well with her. She wanted to ask him about his trip, to know what he had been up to, but fear held her back. What if he had shared something special with Sarah? What if there were memories that didn’t include her? After a while, the conversation flowed effortlessly between Tyler and Sarah, while Emily felt increasingly like a bystander in her own life. She could feel the tension building within her, a storm of emotions swirling beneath the surface. Finally, unable to contain herself any longer, she stood up, excusing herself. “I need to grab something from my room,” she said, trying to sound casual. She retreated into the sanctuary of her bedroom, closing the door behind her. Leaning against the door, Emily took a deep breath. She felt lost. The connection she once shared with Tyler felt strained and fragile. Why was he so distant? Why was Sarah taking up so much of his attention? She pulled her phone out, scrolling through their previous messages, reminiscing about the times they had shared. There was a stark contrast between those moments and the current situation. It hurt to see their playful exchanges replaced by silence. Just then, a knock on the door pulled her from her thoughts. “Emily?” Tyler’s voice was soft, but it only added to her turmoil. “Yeah?” she replied, trying to keep her tone light. “Can I come in?” he asked, his voice tinged with concern. Reluctantly, she opened the door. Tyler stepped inside, the warmth of his presence both comforting and unsettling. “What’s wrong?” he asked, searching her eyes for answers. “Nothing. Just... thinking,” she replied, avoiding his gaze. “About what?” he pressed, stepping closer. Emily hesitated, weighing her words carefully. “About us,” she admitted finally, her voice barely above a whisper. “About how things have changed since you got back.” Tyler’s expression shifted, a flicker of guilt passing through his eyes. “I know things are different. I’ve been busy with... stuff,” he said, but the vagueness of his answer only fueled her frustration. “Busy with Sarah?” she challenged, unable to hold back the bitterness that seeped into her tone. He opened his mouth to respond, but she could see the hesitation in his eyes. “She’s just a friend, Em. You know that.” “Is she?” she shot back, crossing her arms defensively. “Because it sure doesn’t feel like it.” Tyler ran a hand through his hair, exasperated. “I’m trying to figure things out. It’s complicated.” “Complicated?” Emily echoed, her heart racing. “It feels like you’re avoiding me, like you’re more interested in her than in me.” “I’m here, aren’t I?” he countered, but the words felt weak. Emily looked away, fighting back tears. “It doesn’t feel that way. I miss you, Tyler. I miss us.” He stepped closer, his eyes softening. “I miss you too, but—” “But what?” she interrupted, feeling the frustration boil over. “You can’t just ignore me and pretend everything is okay.” “Emily, I—” Before he could finish, the door swung open, and Sarah walked in, her presence shattering the moment. “Hey, I was just about to make some snacks. Want anything?” she asked, her cheerful demeanor oblivious to the tension in the room. “Uh, yeah. Sure,” Tyler replied, turning his attention back to her, and Emily felt the warmth of their connection slip away like sand through her fingers. As Sarah left, Tyler turned back to Emily, but the moment had passed. She could see the walls reestablishing, the distance growing once more. “I’ll be right back,” he said, following Sarah out of the room, leaving Emily standing alone, feeling more lost than ever.
