Veandra turned her boat to sail to the north to escape from the pirates. She also used her paddle to boost her speed but to no use. The pirate ship is gaining closer because it is made to pursue other ships. The ship is a sloop—a small but long ship that can sail much faster than most ships. Little by little, she can hear the cackles of the pirates and the waves crashing into the hull of the ship. She is rowing while facing backward so she can see the ship gaining on her.
