No Turning Back

The scent of gunpowder and blood thickened in the air as the gunfight raged on. The warehouse had become a warzone, filled with the echoes of gunfire, the clash of bullets against steel, and the agonized cries of the wounded. Damian moved like a ghost through the chaos, his movements sharp, precise. Every bullet he fired found its mark. His muscles burned from exhaustion, but he didn’t stop—not when Luca’s men were still flooding through the broken entrance, not when Serena was still in danger. He stole a quick glance at her. Serena crouched behind an overturned crate, gripping the g*n he had given her. Her hands trembled, her breath came in rapid bursts, but her eyes—those fierce, hazel eyes—were steady. She was afraid, but she wasn’t running. That both terrified and thrilled him. “Damian, left!” Marcello’s voice rang out. Damian turned just in time, his instincts kicking in as he fired two shots. The man charging toward him collapsed, blood pooling beneath him. Marcello smirked. “You’re welcome.” Damian grunted, shoving a fresh magazine into his g*n. “Don’t get cocky. We’re not done yet.” Angelo’s men held their ground near the main entrance, taking down anyone who tried to push through. Luciano moved with deadly precision, taking out snipers stationed on the rooftop. “Damian, they’ve got more men outside. We need an exit strategy.” Damian’s mind worked fast. If they stayed, they’d be overrun. But if they ran without a plan, they’d be picked off before they even reached the streets. Then he spotted it. The underground passage. It was an old escape tunnel built beneath the warehouse years ago. He and Marcello had used it before, back when things were simpler—back when he wasn’t fighting for survival. “Marcello, get Serena to the tunnel,” Damian ordered. Serena’s eyes widened. “What about you?” “I’ll hold them off,” he said without hesitation. Serena’s jaw clenched. “I’m not leaving you here to die.” “Serena—” “I said I’m not leaving!” Damian’s heart clenched. There was no time to argue. Marcello groaned. “Great. Lovebirds arguing in the middle of a war.” Angelo stepped in. “I’ll cover you. Get to the tunnel before Luca’s reinforcements arrive.” Damian hesitated for only a second before nodding. “Let’s go.” They moved fast. Luciano and Marcello took point, clearing the way as they pushed toward the hidden entrance behind the storage crates. A bullet whizzed past Serena’s head, embedding itself in the wall inches from her. She gasped, but Damian was already pulling her down, shielding her with his body. “Are you okay?” His voice was tight, controlled. She nodded, swallowing hard. “Then keep moving.” They reached the tunnel. Marcello kicked open the rusted hatch, revealing a dark passage leading beneath the city. Luciano went first, then Serena. Damian was about to follow when a voice stopped him cold. “Well, well. Running away?” His blood turned to ice. Slowly, he turned. Standing near the entrance, g*n in hand, was Luca Moretti. The man who had tried to have him killed. The man who wanted Serena dead. Luca smirked, stepping closer. “I expected better from you, De Luca.” Damian raised his g*n. “I could say the same about you.” Luca laughed. “You always were too sentimental. That girl—Serena—she’s your weakness. And in this world, weakness gets you killed.” Damian’s finger hovered over the trigger. Serena’s voice echoed from below. “Damian, come on!” Luca’s smirk widened. “Go ahead. Run to her. But you know as well as I do—this isn’t over.” Damian’s pulse thundered. Every instinct told him to end it now. One bullet. One shot. And Luca would be gone forever. But gunfire erupted outside—Angelo’s men were being overwhelmed. They were out of time. Damian took a step back. Then another. Luca chuckled. “That’s right. Run while you can.” With one final glare, Damian turned and jumped into the tunnel, sealing the hatch behind him. They had escaped. But the war was far from over.
