The adrenaline pumping through Serena’s veins made her heart race faster than the car speeding through the city. Her hands gripped the seat as the black SUVs behind them kept closing in, their headlights glaring in the rearview mirror. The tension was unbearable, the sound of tires screeching against the asphalt echoing through the streets. Every second felt like it could be their last.
Damian's jaw was set in a hard line, his focus unwavering as he maneuvered the car through sharp turns. His eyes never left the road, even as his phone buzzed again, the screen flashing with multiple messages.
"Damian, they're getting closer!" Serena said, her voice strained with fear. Her pulse was racing, her chest tightening as the distance between them and the SUVs seemed to shrink.
"Stay down," Damian replied, his voice low and cold, but with an edge of urgency. "I need you to trust me right now."
Serena didn’t have the luxury of thinking about it. She stayed low in her seat, heart hammering in her chest as she prayed that they would make it out alive.
Damian slammed on the gas, the engine roaring as he swerved left, narrowly missing a truck that had appeared out of nowhere. The black SUVs followed, relentless. It was as if they knew exactly where to be, as if they had anticipated every move Damian made.
"We need a plan!" Serena yelled over the deafening noise of the car engine.
Damian’s eyes flicked to her briefly. "I’m working on it," he said, his voice tight. He swerved again, this time taking a sharp turn into a narrow alleyway. The sound of screeching tires behind them followed as the black SUVs took the same turn, maintaining their pursuit.
The alley was a maze of tight corners and obstacles, and Damian expertly weaved through the obstacles. Serena could hear the other vehicles struggling to keep up, but she knew it wouldn’t be long before they caught up.
Damian’s face hardened, his expression betraying no emotion as he looked ahead. "Hold on," he said, his voice firm.
He pushed the car to its limits, making a break for it. The alleyway seemed endless, but ahead of them, he saw an opening that could be their escape. The sound of the chasing SUVs grew louder, but Damian wasn’t about to stop.
"Damian, please!" Serena urged, her eyes wide with panic. "We can’t outrun them forever!"
“We won’t have to,” Damian replied grimly, his voice steady. He swerved the car once more, heading straight toward a large truck parked at the end of the alley. For a split second, it seemed as if he was going to crash into it, but at the last second, he turned the car at an impossible angle, sending it sliding sideways.
The world spun around Serena, the car skidding as Damian expertly navigated the sharp turn, but before she could process what had happened, she felt the car launch forward, the engine roaring as they emerged from the alley onto a busy street.
But their escape didn’t last long. The SUVs were right behind them.
"s**t," Damian cursed under his breath, his knuckles white as he gripped the wheel.
Serena’s heart skipped a beat when she saw the flashing lights of a police car up ahead. "Damian, the cops—"
"Don’t think for a second that they’ll help us," Damian interrupted, his voice harsh. "We need to lose them, now."
He didn’t waste any time. He slammed on the gas once more, weaving in and out of traffic, pushing the car to its limits. The black SUVs followed closely, their drivers expertly navigating the crowded streets, not giving up.
Serena clenched her fists in her lap, her thoughts racing. She wanted to scream, to beg for the nightmare to end, but she couldn’t. They were trapped in this dangerous game, and there was no escaping it.
“Hold on!” Damian barked as he veered off the main road, heading into a narrower street lined with abandoned buildings. The black SUVs followed, relentless in their pursuit.
Serena’s breath hitched as they approached a sharp corner. Damian took it too fast, and for a moment, she thought they were going to flip the car. But Damian’s control was flawless. He slid the car around the corner, the tires screeching in protest, and just like that, they were on a new path.
But the SUVs weren’t far behind.
Damian’s phone buzzed again, but this time, he didn’t even glance at it. "Stay low," he ordered.
Just as they neared a dead-end, Damian did something Serena didn’t expect—he slammed on the brakes.
The car came to a screeching halt just inches from the brick wall. Before Serena could react, Damian was out of the car, dragging her with him. "Move!" he commanded, and Serena didn’t hesitate. She ran as fast as she could, her legs aching, her body shaking with fear.
They dashed down a side alley, their footsteps echoing in the silence. Serena could hear the engines of the SUVs getting closer. The world seemed to narrow in on them—no way out, no time left.
And then, suddenly, a dark figure appeared ahead of them, stepping out from the shadows.
"Damian," the figure said coolly, his voice low but unmistakably familiar.
Damian stopped in his tracks, his posture stiffening as he took in the newcomer. Serena’s heart pounded in her chest, but she couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief. There was someone on their side, at least for now.
"Marcello," Damian said, his voice colder than she’d ever heard it. "What are you doing here?"
Marcello’s smirk was laced with a touch of mockery. "I could ask you the same thing. But it seems you’re in a bit of a bind, my friend."
Damian didn’t respond. He just gave a curt nod, signaling for Serena to stay behind him.
As Marcello stepped closer, the sound of the black SUVs reached their ears. Marcello raised his hand, signaling to someone in the distance. Within seconds, a black motorcycle roared to life, screeching around the corner.
"Get on," Marcello ordered.
Damian didn’t hesitate. He pulled Serena toward the motorcycle, his hand firm on her waist as he mounted it first, pulling her onto the back.
"Hold on tight," he muttered in her ear as they sped away, the roar of the engines blending with the sound of the approaching SUVs.
They were far from safe—but for the first time in a long while, Serena felt a flicker of hope. Damian was fighting for them. And that was the only thing that mattered right now.
