Chapter two

A couple months later Bea, Ava and Kelsey were having an amazing time. They were at Bea’s house; having a sleepover. Bea wore a pair of pink, silk Victoria Secret pajama top and shorts which complimented her light brown skin perfectly. Her glossy brown hair fell past her shoulders and drew attention to her golden-brown eyes. Ava, the pageant queen of the group, wore a sexy, sleeveless, satin, red Victoria Secret nightgown which contrasted against her cocoa brown skin. Her hair was in long, tiny, black knotless braids that were currently under her huge, silk, black bonnet. Kelsey, on the other hand wore a pair of silk, white, Victoria Secret pajama top and pants with red cherries on it. She had pale, white skin, blue eyes and beautiful, golden-blonde, waist length hair. They all lay on Bea’s bed watching their favorite series on her tv. “Noo!” they all cried as the main character took a bullet to the chest. The episode ended and they were all emotional. “They need to bring out a new season of this show. I need to know what happens next.” Kelsey declared. Bea and Ava nodded in agreement. “Honestly, how hard can it be to get us a new season?” Ava asked. “Exactly. It’s been 2 years.” Kelsey stated. Bea rolled her eyes and got up. She totally agreed with them, but every time they watched the show, they had the same conversation. It got tiring. We’re probably never getting another season. She thought. She walked to her dressing table and poured them all a tall glass of a mocktail her bartender made. She then walked back to the bed and handed each girl her glass. “Thanks Bea.” They both chorused as they took their drink. Bea nodded. She flopped back into her bed carefully, so as not to pour her drink and took a look at Kelsey and Ava, who are seated at opposite ends of the bed sipping their drinks slowly. “I can’t believe we’re going to be seniors this year.” Ava declared. “Honestly, it’s so surreal. It feels just like yesterday we started high school.” Kelsey added, as she took a sip of her drink. “Right! I can still remember what I wore that day.” Bea said. “Me too!” Both girls squealed. They all laughed and fell into a comfortable silence as they ruminated about high school. “I’m glad to be almost done though.” Bea said quietly, breaking the silence. “Honestly.” Kelsey said in agreement and looked away. They fell silent again, this time thinking about their personal struggles. “Steven and I broke up. Again.” Bea announced after a while. Kelsey and Ava glanced at each other, then at Bea who downed the last of her drink and walked to pour another glass. “When did it happen?” Ava asked tentatively. Bea could be really touchy about her on again, off again relationship with the school’s star football player; Steven Ross. “Beginning of summer.” She replied as she poured herself a drink. “Why?” Kelsey asked. “He was cheating on me. As usual.” Bea rolled her eyes and took a long sip. “I’m done with him.” Bea declared. Kelsey and Ava shared a look. “What?!” Bea asked noticing it. Kelsey raised up her hands in defense. “Nothing.” She said. “It’s just that every time you guys break up, you say you’re done with him.” Ava said. “And you never are.” Kelsey added. Bea folded her arms across her chest and glared at them. “This time, I actually am.” Kelsey and Ava shared another look. “I promise guys that I, Beatrice Marie Summers.” Bea said as she placed her left hand on her chest and raised her right hand in the air, “am done with Steven Ross. I solemnly swear that if I go back to him, you guys; Kelsey Patricia Montogomery and Ava Bernice Townsend, are both permitted to cut me off forever.” She put her hands down. “You know I actually will right.” Kelsey said, giving Bea a teasing look. “I expect nothing less.” Bea smiled and moved to the bed. “Anyway, it’s a good thing. Maybe you’ll have a delicious romance before the year ends.” Ava said. “Nope. I’m done with love.” Bea said sternly. “In more pleasant news, I was made the head of the welcoming committee.” Kelsey announced. “No way, congratulations Kels.” Bea cooed as she pulled Kelsey in for a hug. “Thank goodness.” Ava said “Senior parties are definitely going to be lit then.” “Yes!” Kelsey nodded “I have so many ideas, we’re definitely going to have a blast.” “I hope those ideas include lots of alcohol.” Ava inquired as she poured herself another drink. Kelsey and Bea rolled their eyes. “We’re not all alcoholics Ms. Townsend.” Bea teased. Ava flashed her middle finger. “I’m not an alcoholic.” She protested. They all laughed. “You guys should join the welcoming committee.” Kelsey implored them later. They were all on the floor eating pizza and cupcakes as their toenails dried. “Nah. I’ve got my hands full with pageants and modelling.” Ava said. Kelsey nodded and turned to Bea. “What about you, Bea?” She asked. “Yeah sure, no problem. It’ll be good on my college application anyway.” Bea agreed. “Are you sure you’ll have time Bea? You’re already doing debate and cheer.” Ava questioned. Bea waved her hand dismissively. “I’ll be fine.” She said. Ava shrugged. “Okay, if you say so.” Kelsey clapped excitedly. “Yay!” * * * RAPHAEL Raphael threw the ball and it bounced off the board and into the net. The umpire’s whistle blew. Yes. Raphael punched the air in the celebration. His team had won the game. He jogged to the bleachers, grabbed his water bottle and took a big gulp. The cold liquid washed down his throat and gave him relief. “Nice game, man.” A voice said and slapped his shoulder lightly. Raphael put his bottle down briefly and saw his best friend; DeAndre beside him. “Thanks, man. You too.” He responded. They both sat down on the bleachers and took in the indoor basketball court. DeAndre had been his best and only friend since elementary school. They were complete opposites. While Raphael was tall and light brown skinned with short, brown hair and black eyes, DeAndre was tall, lanky and chocolate skinned with a tall, big afro. “So, what’s up with school?” DeAndre asked. Raphael shrugged. “I’m starting at Westbrook on Monday.” He answered nonchalantly and took a swing of his water. DeAndre blew a whistle. “Westbrook is posh and very expensive.” He commented. Raphael shrugged again then said “The tuition isn’t really my concern.” DeAndre gave Raphael an incredulous look. “Not really your concern? Man, don’t play. We both know how much of a privilege it is for you to be able to go to school there.” He said. Raphael nodded. “I know. I know.” He said. DeAndre looked back at the court and said “Don’t f**k this up again, Raph. Westbrook has a fantastic team. Go there and play your heart out. Let scouts notice you. Get a basketball scholarship, go pro.” Raphael looked at his friend. “That’s the plan.” He said, “Uncle Lucas said it’s also my last chance. If I’m expelled again, he’s done with me.”
