I cried as I dialed up Canada’s number. It rang once. Twice. Three times. Fo- “Hello?” “M-Mathew,” I sniffled. “I need your help.” “I’ll be there as soon as I can.” Canada was there with in a half hour. He texted me when he arrived and met me at the servants entrance. “What’s wrong, Kinder?” “I-I…” I doubled over into his arms in tears again. “I don’t want to do this… I don’t want his…” “Kinder? What are you talking about?” I pulled the little plastic stick from my pocket and showed it to him. “Kinder, how long? Who’s is it?” “The… the King… he… he…” “Shhh…” He wrapped his arms around me protectively. It wasn’t the one armed thing he had done before but rather a full on embrace of my entire body. “It’s okay. You don’t have to say any more…” I sobbed into shirt. “I… I don’t want to bring this child into this world… I don’t want it to be born like this…” Canada’s arms didn’t relax at all. He cradled my head in his. “We won’t let the child come into this world, but rather a better one. Let me take you back to Canada with me this time. I don’t want to leave you here with such monsters.” I nodded into his shirt. At this point anything sounded better than staying in the castle like house with the messed up royal family. I knew I’d still have to come up with an excuse to leave but at least I would be leaving. “I… I have to tell them that I’m leaving… what do… what do I tell them?” “He probably won’t let you leave if he knows it’s his…” Mathew thought for a moment. He loosened his grip so he could see my face and he caressed my chin with his hand. “Tell them that the child is mine. If they know that then they should let you go with me.” “Please,” I looked into Canada’s blue eyes, “come with me. I… I don’t want to face them alone.” “Yes. I will come with you.” Mathew released his arms and grabbed my hands. “Just led the way.” I smiled at him and wiped my tears on the sleeve of my jacket. “Thank you.” I turned and pulled him inside, closing the door behind us. I led him up the stairs and into the room where the King and Queen sat watching their son play in the rose garden with another kid. I bowed to them and Mathew did the same. “Speak, child,” the queen said. “Yes, ma’am.” I stood straight again. “I am asking for your permission to leave.” I grabbed Canada’s hand. The King’s head snapped to me. “On what grounds?” I set my free hand over my stomach defensively even though there was no baby bump yet. “I’m pregnant.” The queen blinked at me for a moment. “What? Who?” I looked at Mathew. “His.” They stared back and forth between me and Canada. Canada decided to break to silence. “I would like to take Kinder back to my house, ay… I want to give her the best possible treatment I can if there are any problems.” “Oh… um… yes. I suppose she can go…” The Queen looked at her husband. “Right?” “Yes…” He stared at us. “You can go.” His voice sounded more like he didn’t want his wife to find out he had cheated on her than actual concern for my health. “Thank you.” Canada smiled brightly at them. I looked at Canada with a smile. I was leaving. “Good bye, sir. Good bye ma’am.” I felt a tear of joy roll down my face. I pulled Mathew back to my room and began packing.
